This is the pinnacle of 1/72 F-104Cs. This kit was manufactured for Revell-Monogram in 1996 by Academy of Korea. Don’t believe me? Check the side of the Revell or Monogram boxing and you’ll see the “Mfg in Korea” markings. It was the best 1/72 F-104C back then, and still is today. The Hasegawa F-104 series is nice, but it’s a little old, and has a bit less detail in the cockpit and wheel bays. These manufactures continue to compete with older molds by adding new decals. It’s no different here, as this kit comes with markings for Vietnam era Starfighters. It comes with an optional refueling probe, correct landing gear for a US F-104C with optional gear for later foreign makes (but only US decals). This is something the Hasegawa kit does not, as it’s got primarily the “export” wheels. Whereas the Hasegawa and Italeri kits are later F-104s for the export market, this is a US version of the F-104C. The decals include full stenciling and markings for four versions in bare metal or in SE Asia is a nice kit, and lower priced than the Hasegawa version. If you’re looking for a nice accurate F-104C in 1/72 scale, this is the one to get. On a builders note, the engine air intakes will need a bit of “finessing” and maybe some filler along the seam lines, but nothing an average model builder couldn’t handle. Overall, this is a five star kit.

With Academy kits, it's often either hit or miss, and in my opinion this is a hit. The detail is good for this scale, the parts fit well, and there are four different versions to choose from (USAF standard bare metal, SEA camo, Taiwanese and Japanese). You have to pay close attention to the instructions, as there are structural differences between the different versions as well as different paint schemes and decals. The kit comes with Sidewinder missiles and underwing drop tanks. I added the kit supplied Sidewinders, but chose to add TERs and Mk 81s from the Hasegawa Aircraft Weapons 1 set and it turned out nicely. I did have a little trouble adding the main landing gear doors, and had to do some careful touch-up work when one of the decals got damaged during application, but overall it was a fun and easy build.

箱を開けてびっくり！ぱっと見OEMかと思った程、ハセガワの劣化デッドコピー。デカールもカルトグラフではなく内製で色も変です。近頃躍進著しいアカデミーですがこのキットはハズレですね。
