Drnaso creates complex, subtle character studies to a level that is extremely rare in graphic novels, and he does it with illustrations not unlike a Dilbert comic strip or a wikihow.I find myself studying these restrained, tiny-eyed faces for the tiniest of clues. What are they thinking? Do they feel claustrophobic? Are they plotting something?Reading his books is a delicious treat and I savor every minimalist page, especially on the first reading. He writes people like an autist whose special interest is people. There’s a deep empathy and perceptiveness about human nature, counterweighted by a sense of distance. A loneliness shared by characters, author and reader. His work is one of those things I will buy immediately, no questions asked. Just like I will do with Simon Hanselmann’s Megg Mogg and Owl, if he makes something I will pre-order it before I know what it is even about. This was a strange and complex story that fully capitalized on the medium of the graphic novel, playing with space and “scenes” via the acting class. It was at times disorienting but always had my full attention. Excellent, one of my new favorites.

I first read Drnaso's book Sabrina by going in blind not knowing much about it and loved it. I highly recommend doing the same with this book, and his other book Beverly. Great writing and story.
