I lent this to my cider-making and allotment-owning friend to get the most accurate review - he was duly impressed by it... It's a very neat little unit. It’s very compact, fits into the hand nicely, and has a pleasing weight to it. It’s apparently waterproof or “water resistant” too, although the IP rating isn’t stated in the instruction manual. It turns on very quickly, and is ready for use as soon as it’s on. I took the advice in the manual and zeroed it with a little deionised water before I took my first reading, although the first reading was only 0.1% off complete zero anyway. It took a little while to get my first Brix reading as after pressing the Measurement button the display kept saying “add solution” so I wondered whether I’d added enough, and kept adding more and pressing the button. In the end, I did the classic Off and back On again, and that seemed to wake it up and I got my first reading. This year’s apple juice measured 10.9% before it started its journey towards ciderhood. My old refractometer, which I trust, and which I know agrees with my hydrometer, measured 11.0%, so that’s pretty good. Taking into account any differences due to my eyesight, and less than perfect illumination, I’d say I’d be tempted to trust this digital refractometer over the optical one, but as there’s only 0.1% in it, it doesn’t really matter. So, overall, very impressed. Nice to handle, nice to use, and quick and easy.A little more difficult to clean than an optical refractometer, as there’s a little well to get in and clean out, rather than just wiping the “slide” of an optical refractometer, but a screwed-up corner of a tea towel does the trick.
