The Review Chimp

Now, I'm a huge fan of retro gaming, and I sport a number of retro consoles, both home and handheld, with the vast majority of them being from Anbernic. Now, Anbernic have a habit of releasing new devices every other week, and the RG40XX H is another in a long line of devices using the Allwinner H700 chip. I also believe it will be the last to use this chip too.Anyway, the handheld comes in the usual Anbernic minimalist box, inside is the device, a short charging cable, and some poor instructions. However, if you own other Anbernic devices before, then you know how these work. So, this review will be the "out of the box" experience. I won't go into detail about obtaining ROM's, BIOS files, or custom firmware (CFW), but II will say that you're probably best to change the CFW from stock. I'm testing Knulli on the RG40XX H at the moment and it's going okay.Anyway, the device is very nice, it's about the same size of a Nintendo Switch screen and is decently built. There is some weakness along the bottom, particularly where the SD cards go, there is a bit of flex going on there. All the buttons, and the thumbsticks are very well made too.It feels fairly comfortable in the hand, though the back is a little bit on the slick side, it would have been better if it was more tactile like the stacked shoulder buttons.Turning it on, I found quite a bit of screen bleed, but you get this with Anbernic, quality control is lax.Stock OS is okay and serviceable, but there's plenty options available in the settings to get it to appear/work as you want. For example I turned off the LED lights on the thumbsticks, and turned off button sounds. The device comes with a 64GB MicroSD card with the firmware and a number of games across various systems installed. When you get an Anbernic you're best to get rid of the card as they tend to be unbranded and poor quality. However, in this case Kioxia is the brand, which apparently used to be Toshiba, so it has some pedigree to it. However, you're probably still best to clone it and image it onto a bigger capacity card.During the first day of gaming, I found that most games I tried worked very well, worked okay ish, or just didn't work at all. After a full day of testing I was ready to give it a 4 to 5 star review, until day 2 when I turned it on.On Day 2, when playing cases, all input was registering incorrectly, on delving in, I found that the system was forever pushing left, i.e., on games my character was always walking left, I couldn't make them walk right, for example.Google suggested a number of things, nothing helped, I put the thing to sleep, and after several hours, it was still messed up. I eventually depleted the battery, recharged to full, and, lo and behold, it was "fixed". That said it happened again, later in the day, and the next. This is when I started to experiment with CFW, which, currently is far better than custom and I've not seen a repeat of the issue, or had the battery drain I was seeing with stock. So, based on the out of the box, stock experience, this is a mixed bag, you HAVE to use CFW to get the best out of this, you HAVE to use a large capacity SD card (I would suggest 64GB for the firmware and a minimum of 128GB for your games (256GB being ideal), and you WILL need to replace just about all the ROM's that come with the system.

This was easy to set up, just asking for the date and time before moving on to the main menu. You can get it on to wifi with minimal fuss and it comes pre-loaded with a surprising number of games from various consoles, including a huge library of classic arcade games. There are even a few PS1 games and other consoles of that era and before. It comes with retroarch as standard so all you need to do is pop the memory card into you computer and you can easily add more roms to it if you want something specific. As always with these emulator machines there is a small learning curve but essentially you download roms and add them to the correct folder in the "roms" folder, which is determined by the console the game is for. Be warned though that the memory card is almost full out of the box, so you might want to add your own if you want to add too much to this.It has a sleep function so you can just tap the off button to put the console into hibernate, and then press it again to wake it up where it'll be right where it was when you left it in your game.Controls are very similar layout to a PS Vita but with two shoulder buttons on each side and generally more spread out. The screen is easily clear and sharp enough for the games you'll be playing on it.An all round decent handheld console for the price just for the games that come with it, let alone what you can add yourself.
