They look beautiful, a set for afternoon tea, all we needed was the cake stand and cake. This is a set of cups, saucers, pot, milk jug etc. On inspection, the items are a bit more solid than I would have expected for porcelain, not quite the almost transparent ceramic my grandmother's set are. But then they are not the substantial three figures that would cost if you could buy them today and I'm sure that anyone getting these as a present for a wedding or some other event would be really pleased. What I didn't much care for was the packaging. It's ok for preventing breaks I guess, but it spreads polystyrene dust and crumbs everywhere and cheapens the feel of the whole set. We needed to wash the dust off before use. OK we would have washed them anyway, but I would expect and want a better standard of packaging if this was to be given as a present. Hence the four stars.

Reviewing this item on its own terms, it is a beautiful tea set that anyone would admire. It’s a classy combination of white and gold, and even has little porcelain spoons. In those terms it is good value and I would recommend it. Just a couple of caveats: the packaging is perfect for safe transit but not so great for unpacking (messy and environmentally unfriendly), and until I read in the description that it was lead free porcelain it hadn’t crossed my mind that could be a problem as it’s something you’d never have to think about if buying from somewhere like John Lewis etc. So I googled, and apparently some imports from places like China could be porcelain that contains lead. Obviously I can’t take their word for it so I’m going to have to buy a lead testing kit. Fortunately they seem to be under ten pounds.
