Loved the cover and the price. Didn't perform as well as I had hoped.

The main reason I have been using this is for Bushcraft Fire Starting while backpacking and hiking. It's a great little tool. Hefty, and has a good weight to it. It is sharp as heck! So be careful. Very simple and easy to use, rudimentary skill set.You basically use 12-in to maybe 16 inch stick of wood, passed through the eyelet, to twist the auger into the main piece of wood you're trying to create a hole in. Then auger a second hole 90° to the first hole, and you've got your l shape. From there, you can stuff the wood shavings into the L, like those, and you'll basically start a fire from within the log, as opposed to letting it from the outside. Usually this type of setup, which is very similar to a Swedish torch, not exactly, but close, gives you more burn time on the piece of wood that you were trying to get heat and Fire from.It does feel like solid carbon steel, not sure if it's exactly stainless. So definitely be careful to keep it dry. I wouldn't take this thing through a river or anything and get it soaking wet.You may want to oil it from time to time, with some good machine oil like something you would use for a sewing machine. And then just towel it dry after that to clear up any excess. This pair is very nicely with a Silky Gomboy, especially if you're doing a lot of backpacking in the backcountry.Just as a matter of safety, you do need a fire permit in a lot of areas here in California. And there's a reason why you have to watch a video and take a test. Use it wisely and safely, and always have a bucket of water or a completely full hydration pack which you can easily dump out onto a fire if things get out of hand or get out of control.

Ever been camping and couldn't sink your stakes because the ground was too hard? We have! And it is not a pleasant situation!Cue the Wood Auger. This little gem found its way into my husband's Christmas stocking this year (Thank you, Santa!). It comes with a leather carrying case and a velcro-secured leather sheath to protect the bit.Add a handle and a little force, and this thing can drill a one-inch hole in any piece of wood, and it can break some pretty tough ground, too, if it comes to that. Just remember it is a wood auger. It won't drill rock.If you are a survivalist living off-grid, I'd imagine you'd need this. We need it, and we're just campers.Creative survivalists could use this auger to make "bushware," like furniture and decor items, too. While I do have a drill with a 1-inch round blade, I would be hard-pressed to make a 1-inch hole this nice without power or power tools. In the woods, I can think of a hundred ways to use this tool. We are happy to have it in our camping tool collection.

The welded joint/link for the hand auger (where it makes a t-handle) has a clean finish. To my surprise, it is unbelievably hard to find a right diameter of a wood stick to put it through the eye of the Scottish eye auger this season. Too much demand of those by too many bushcraftsmen around this year? So, used it without a stick. With a help of its wood drilling bit at its tip, it’s an easy manual driving to start to drilling into a target wood, but the wood splits into two (or more) soon after the auger blades started to drilling into the wood. Tried multiple times, but each ended with the same result. Too macho? Or the weather must have been too dry this year. As long as the welded joint lasts, this could bring years of use to help you survive. Might be a good idea to keep a piece of wood (about an inch diameter), that fits into the eye of this Scottish eye auger, along as a set so you don’t have to look for one each and every time.
