The unit has been our workhouse in cutting photography prints, it precisely cuts even thick papers. When we need to do ultra fine trimmings, it's able to easily handle it. To test out how fine of a cut it can do, I did a tapered cut on a .0118" thick paper and measured the smallest end of the taper it can cut: .0038"! More than enough for manually cutting and trimming paper. Highly recommend this cutter. When considering purchasing one, I'd recommend getting a larger unit than one you'd initially want otherwise upgrading becomes relatively more expensive.

The blade just doesn't stay in place.

Ok but blade not very sharp and struggles to clamp paper down, especially on large sheets. Expect some movement on thiiner sheets.

This trimmer is HORRIBLE. I own a smaller Dahle 448 and there is no problem with the cutter wheel sliding off the track, which due to this issue I've just ruined 2, 12"x36" prints. The problem with the 500 series is the bar going across. It is FLIMSY. I should not be able to move the bar, as in bend it horizontally or vertically but you can. It's cheap metal and this is all on Dahle itself. They could had made this a better cutter if they would had used a thicker bar to run across the cutter, but they cheaped out and went for a thin flexible chrome tube instead of a thick chrome tube which you can't flex. If you are a working professional and want to save yourselves a TON of headache, pay the extra $120 for the "Premium" model which like my 448 has a tubular shaped bar for the cutting head to track on vs a thin flexible bar to track on. Horrible that this should even be a problem. In the photos you will see where the wheel when the bar bends ends up on top of the surface and not along the cutting track like you will see in the other photo where it's riding along a steel bar that helps the blade stay sharpened.
