This is a heist film with disillusioned socialist turned robber Robert Carlyle. I'm assuming that Damon Albarn mayhave considered he was emulating Mick Jagger in Performance, but there is not a great song like Memo from Turneror even issues of identity between mainstream and the counterculture. I think for a British heist film I'd try Lock stock andtwo smoking barrels before getting this.Robert Caryle is better in Trainspotting and Ray Winstone is better in Sexy Beast

Even though for a heist genre film, Face (1997) has a touch of late night BBC drama that drags it down a little, there's still a thrilling payroll robbery scene and some well choreographed short action scenes. Director Antonia Bird ensures that her film has a beating heart of social commentary on late 1990s Britain and that the usually ignored terror and anguish left on victims and perpetrators of violence in action films, is shown especially during the payroll heist itself when Ray (Robert Carlyle) sees the devastation in the faces of the security firm staff and is later haunted by those same eyes. The entire cast shine in their roles, adding telling character quirks and mannerisms, while Philip Davis chews the scenery and is simply outstanding as the psychotic Julian.

This is a great film but I am a bit bias because I love anything with Robert Carlyle in - I think he is a great actor and always believable in whatever role he plays! The film does contain some violent scenes but you only have to look at the list of actors to realise what it is all about. Good film to watch when you want a bit of escapism - worth buying.

Robert Carlyle heads a stellar british cast which includes Ray Winstone, Phil Davis, Sue Johnston and others in a taut crime thriller set in London. Ray (played by Robert Carlyle)is the 'face' of the title, an established villan respected by the criminal fraternity.Together with four others he commits a robbery which results in a take a lot smaller than was expected And then somebody starts stealing the cash from the robbers and killing people too.There follows a fraught period when Ray and his friends try to discover who is responsible for the thefts and the murders at the same time as trying to avoid capture by the police. A touching romantic element adds the finishing touch to this thriller which, I believe, is one of the best british crime thrillers ever made.Highly reccomended.
