Surprise, surprise, but methyl esters of fatty acids made from vegetable oils is actually bio diesel for those who do not know this. I didn't either, until I delved into the chemistry for a bit and was genuinely surprised to find this out. Now, onto it's use as an oil product to use for torches and hurricane (storm) lanterns. At first I was a bit apprehensive because the so called "flame point" of bio diesel is higher than that of old school lamp oil made from pure paraffin (if you are lucky) or the usual mixture of carbon chain aromats, paraffin and maybe even a bit of naphta. The problem with the latter is that it really smells of burnt oil while you are using it in a lamp and the aromats are somewhat unhealthy if not carcinogenic. I always heard my mother and nowadays my wife shout that the hurricane lantern could not burn inside the house or only for a very short period and certainly not in a bedroom. Now with this bio diesel this all changed. It burns with a bright warm white light, not that yellowish as the other stuff and there is a smell, but it is so much fainter and lesser than with the regular lamp oil products out there. Pure and refined (farmaceutical quality) white paraffin oil is great too, but this one is not poisonous, there are NO warning symbols on the bottle anymore and that makes it so much safer for our pets and children inside the house. I do not want to use anything else than these methyl ester of fatty acids/bio diesel anymore !If you detect any smell at all, than that is off the rape seed oil that was used in it's production or any other vegetable oil. You can make bio diesel from differing vegetable oils you see. I tried bio lamp oil from EDEKA in Germany (another name for the FLASH brand) and I used these SEL Chemistry Dutch bio lampoil and both are excellent in my experience. I hope this has been informative.P.S. the higher flame point makes it less combustible/flammable compared to conventional lamp oil, which is also an advantage, except when you have open flame torches in your garden with a bit of wind. In that use case I would suggest the more flammable lower flame point of traditional lamp oil will be more of a benefit towards the flame not being that easily blown out by the wind, but with a hurricane lantern that is no problem and I only use it in those lanterns of which I have a nice colection by now. ;-)
