I’ve not tried needle felting before, but I’m always happy to try my hand at new crafts. I’d seen completed needle felted items but had not seen needle felting done before, and looking at the results had always assumed that there was some element of sewing and stuffing involved with the pieces – but that’s not it at all. Everything is made from wool that’s matted together into a felt by stabbing it with needles – there’s nothing else to it. Everything is shaped from pieces of wool. For a first try, I selected the dachshund kit: this is the breed of dogs I’ve always had around, so it just seemed right.This little kit came with three colours of wool (a medium/light brown, black and a pale cream), a pair of long, thick needles in a plastic storage tube, and a set of colourful instructions with both written descriptions and step by step photographs. The instructions are clear, well-presented, and easy to follow.The first hurdle I had to encounter with this kit is that you need a foam block to work over, so that when you start applying needles you’re stabbing in to something that ‘gives’ and won’t be damaged. The foam isn’t included. I managed to find a good-sized piece of packaging foam that’s just right.The wool supplied with this kit feels lovely – super-soft and it’s really interesting to see how quickly and easily stabbing through with needles changes the character of the wool from fine filament yarn into a substantive mat.The light brownish colour isn’t quite dachshund accurate, and I’m tempted to try and stab a few threads of our real dachsie’s fur in to this after brushing her to give this a more realistic appearance.I’ve followed the instructions carefully, but even so the body on mine (I’ve made the body, legs, and head so far) seems a bit on the long side. I can see why the instructions suggest that you err on the side of smaller pieces as it’s much easier to add extra wool to increase the size of a piece than it is to take bits off a section that has been matted together.This is an easy craft to do – but getting accurate shaping and evenness in pieces is going to take a bit of practice. My first go is definitely in the right area appearance-wise but is a bit lumpy. And long. Even for a dachshund.

This kit is adorable. It comes with everything you need to make a cute sausage dog except a foam block which you do need to supply yourself. It comes with a well-written instruction leaflet. I found it useful to also watch the company’s YouTube videos. This kit will make a lovely gift as the packaging is beautiful. However, I do think it’s a bit pricey given that you need to buy a foam block as well.

A very disappointing craft item, I've never tried this before so I thought "lets have a go", its very small, there's no instructions in the tiny box, it states there is but none in mine, I went on the internet to get some idea of what to do. You need to buy a foam block too, it states its for beginners you would have thought the block would be included, so you had everything you needed. When its complete it looks nothing like a Dachshund not even a dog. A total waste of money.

A lot smaller than expected but it just enhances the cuteness of this. A great kit to start someone off in the craft. I love needlefelting and have done a fair bit. A fun and cheap craft which is also pretty easy to do!
