Hard to find WWI warship models, looking forward to building it. Looking over the instructions, thought they could be a bit better, but seem to be a basic form utilized for any language.

This incarnation of the SMS Grosser Kurfürst of the four-ship König class from ICM goes to fill a gap in the evolution of capital ships that most mainstream manufacturers have mostly ignored. I like that there are more First World War models becoming available, but this one unfortunately reminds me of some Academy, Airfix or Italeri kits from the mid 80s and 90s.The kits is cast from a soft dark grey styrene. The small parts can be difficult to remove from the sprues, there are sinkholes and a few ejector pin marks in awkward spots. There is an overall lack of fine detail compared to the more recent offerings from the likes of Hasegawa or Tumpeter, and the part fit isn't quite what Tamiya has with its line of (now classic) 1/350 scale WWII battleships. There is /nowhere/ near the amount of flash or any mold misalignment the offerings from Academy et all had (or still have in some cases...), however, and is vastly better than the nigh-ancient 1/350 scale kits from Lindberg. The hull is a single piece with no internal bulkheads, so if you plan to build a waterline version there will be some careful cutting ahead for you. (One particular annoyance with the hull that I cannot unsee is that the bilge keels are of unequal size, the one side larger and more sharply defined than the other.)There is a very small water-slide decal sheet with flags and turret-top ID rings, the paint guide uses Humbrol color numbers and their names. There is no photoetch, anchor chain (its cast in) or rigging line included. The black-and-white instruction sheet is in English and Ukrainian/Russian. The assembly steps are very clear and easy to follow, and has large top and starboard views of the completed model to assist in painting and illustrate the rigging plan.Obviously, I have not finished this kit, or really begun assembly beyond trying to get a feel for component fit and a general idea of how much screwing around assembly and finish will require. (You will become better friends with your filler of choice in building this kit.) Overall, I would not consider this a beginners kit, mostly due to the massage work to get the parts and sub-assemblies to fit together. I haven't yet figured out how accurate the kit itself is to the prototype circa 1914. That said, there are not a lot of choices for World War I ships, and my Trumpeter HMS Dreadnaught was looking lonely and slightly intimidated by the comparative behemoths from the 1940s. This will take more work than the Trumpeter kit did, but hey, if it were easy...

Das ICM-Modell ist halt das einzige, das in diesem Maßstab auf dem Markt ist. Die Qualität ist eher dürftig, die Passgenauigkeit läßt zu wünschen übrig. Der verwendete Kunststoff ist viel zu weich. Filigrane Teile brechen allzuz leicht weg. Die Deckshäuser müssen einfach aus ebenen Einzelwänden zusammengeklebt werden, das ist nicht nur lästig, sondern einfach primitiv und Stand der Technik von vor fünfzig Jahren. Versuchen Sie mal, Plättchen von 1,5 mm mal 1.5 mm bei 0,8 mm Dicke zu berarbeiten, auszuschneiden, zu entgraten und dann hinzukleben. Nicht zu verglichen mit Herstellern wie Trumpeter, Dragon oder gar Tamiya.Sämtliche Rohre der Artillerie musste ich aus Messingröhrchen und Injektionsnadelkanülen selbst neu erstellen, ebenso die Masten aus Metallrohren komplett neu aufbauen. Der, wie gesagt, sehr weiche Kunststoff der Masten hätte sich beim Auftakeln zwangsläufig elendiglich verbogen.Es kommt also jede Menge zusätzlicher Arbeit auf den Bastler zu, zumal die Baupläne eher mäßig sind (ich bin technischer Zeichner, Maschinenbau) und die Nummern auf den Spritzlingen kaum zu erkennen sind.Wenn am Ende tatsächlich ein schmuckes Schiff in die Vitrine kommt, dann liegt das weniger am ukrainischen Hersteller, als an den Fähigkeiten und der Phantasie des Bastlers. Zu empfehlen also nur für denjenigen, der (wie ich) halt unbedingt dieses Schiff haben will. Möchten Sie lieber irgendein tolles Schiff basteln, dann greifen Sie bitte zu einem anderen ... !
