And make no mistake about it, its the superb movie thats the star here. If... is, for those new to it, set in a British public school, and from this setting it has plenty then to say on authority and society. Directed by the late, great Lindsay Anderson, the film centres on Mick Travis, magnetically portrayed by Malcolm McDowell.
Superbly marrying fantasy and more realistic elements, If... is packed with iconic, and often quite surreal moments, leading right up the to the famed and indelible ending that sticks long in your mind once the credits have rolled.
A strong, powerful influence for many who followed it, If... is powered by Malcolm McDowells astounding performance (which would earn him the part in Stanley Kubricks A Clockwork Orange). Its arguable that hes never been better than he is here, and hes in good company, thanks to a top-quality supporting cast too.
Perhaps the greatest complement to If... though is that, decades after is initial release, its not only recognised as one of the finest British films ever made, but its regarded in many quarters as a classic of cinema full stop. And if youve not yet had the pleasure, this DVD release finally, belatedly, can open the film up to a whole new audience. Lets hope it does. --Jon Foster

When I first learnt of public schools at the age of about twelve in the mid 1980s, I just couldn’t believe a small number of boys of my age were going to have such an education. I was shocked and stunned and I hated and resented the whole idea of it. A rigid class system dividing the entire education system which you cannot change as you too enter it. I did not want to believe and I just could not believe such schools were going to continue for my generation too. Just as they had done so for countless generations of boys before us. I simply couldn’t understand why all the parents and all the adults wanted them to continue. It seemed so unfair and unjust. Couldn’t they see how unfair and unjust it was? Couldn’t they see how the schools were going to perpetuate inequality in education and society? Couldn’t they see that the class system was going to continue if you allow some boys to have such an advantage and privilege within education? It is difficult to explain, and as a teenager I never thought I would say this, but as you become older you slowly begin to see for yourself the important role public schools (like Eton, Harrow and Winchester) play within education. You begin to understand and also to acknowledge the invaluable and incalculable role these schools have in educating each generation. Especially during the progressive and troublesome decades like the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Above all else, just like with this film, you begin to see how special it would be if it continued. Not only for the next generation but also for the future generations of boys who will follow after them. Put simply the boys and increasingly the girls who attend our public schools are quite frankly very lucky and also very fortunate to do so. We should be supporting them. Not hating them and saying we despise them. For they are the very best of their generation. The cream. The elite. Future leaders. Excellent film by the way. Stirring strong emotions about the idea of a public school system and, of course, the successful perpetuation of the class system which it ensures. You either vehemently hate and detest these ideas or passionately want to protect and defend them and, as I've become older, I can honestly say it is certainly the latter.

Film erschließt sich nur im Zeitzusammenhang und ist für heutige Köpfe eher anstrengend und weird. Ist was für die, die sich in das Spannungsfeld zwischen konservative Erziehung und Bigotterie der 1970er einerseits und terroristischem Aufstand andererseits eindenken wollen.

Als Fan des seligen Lindsay Anderson und seines Protagonisten Malcolm McDowell ist der Kauf dieser DVD ein Muss. Die Handlung und die Darstellung war in den 6oer und 70er Jahren echter Underground und für uns (ich bin Baujahr 1943) ein Grund, auf der Straße für mehr Freiheit und Gerechtigkeit zu demonstrieren. Besonders zum Ende der 60er.Heutigen jüngeren Interessierten mag der Film nicht mehr sooo zusagen und schon etwas antiquiert erscheinen. Doch denke ich, um die '68er besser zu verstehen, wäre für manchen der Erwerb dieses Films und das Beschäftigen mit den gezeigten realistischen Zuständen im damaligen GB von sinnvoller Horizonterweiterung.Die Qualität der DVD ist gut bis sehr gut und an den Darstellern gibt es nix zu kritisieren. Kaufempfehlung für Interessierte und Nostalgiker.]

This film charts out a new term at an exclusive Public School. In particular, one section, 'College House'. The plot is about a very brutal regime verses a small rebellious element, in particular three students Travis (brilliantly played by Malcolm McDowell), Wallace and Knightly.There are some shocking moments in this and a good number of very odd ones as well, such as the House Master's wife who like to wander around the changing rooms nude, and the Padre who is produced out of a draw in the Head Master's office. At the end, they seem to all fit in together. For additional effect, some bits of the film are in black and white.The film studio used one college to film much of this and caused outrage within the college authorities, with the final scenes of this film. This film caused offence in many quarters fourty years ago. These days it is seen as an absolute classic and has collected many awards.

Ein sehr gut gemachter Film, hat nicht umsonst Auszeichnungen bekommen.Das Leben im Internat ist nicht immer ein Vergnügen, auch für ältere Semester nicht.Die ganzen Szenen sind sehr gut gemacht, der Rohrstock ist dort noch das Erziehungsmittel, was auch eindrücklich gezeigt wird, was schließlich zum Terror führt.Die Musik ist wundervoll, das Sanctus, gesungen vom Chor der Schule ist wunderschön. Man sieht, d.h. hört, dass die Anglikanische Kirche die Schönheiten der Liturgie aufgenommen hat, im Gegensatz zur Evangelischen Kirche, also ist es eine Mischung der beiden Kirchenliturgien.
