Amazing product! Thins as well as turpinoid without being toxic. I only use it to thin paint as it's expensive. I use citrasol then Dr Bronners soap to clean the brushes non toxically.

I got this because the reviews said it wasn't a strong scent. It's strong or stronger.

Unlike the lavender oil used in therapeutic aromatherapy, this particular Oil Of Spike Lavender is a solvent used as an alternative to turpentine, especially as an ingredient in oil painting mediums. It's derived from a part of the botanical called "lavendula latifolia."Oil Of Spike Lavender can be very useful as a solvent in making your own oil painting mediums. It dries more slowly than Odorless Mineral Spirits (OMS) and significantly more slowly than turpentine. Because its solvent action is stronger than turpentine and much stronger than OMS, it is able to form a better bond with your previous layers of paint -- but you do have to be careful that it doesn't lift your underlying oil paint layers. It creates a slicker, more-workable characteristic in the painting mediums that I prepare. I use a mix of Oil of Spike Lavender, either Damar Varnish or Copal Varnish, and either stand oil or sun-thickened oil (the type of varnish and oil used as well as the ratio of the three ingredients depends on whether I'm painting fat or lean layers). While I do use plain turpentine often in my painting, I find the smell of the Oil of Spike Lavender to be much more pleasant. Just be careful with how aggressive it is.I've found that the Oil of Spike Lavender works even better than turpentine in removing stubborn bits of resin from my brushes when cleaning them.

So in love with this stuff. I got it so I could paint through the winter without keeping my window open.I've been using a medium made of half linseed oil, half spike lavender, and I love the way it handles. Because it has stronger solvent action than OMS, it feels like it "grips" a little more as you're painting over an oil ground or over other layers of paint.It's an essential oil, so there's a potential for it to become sensitizing and cause an allergic reaction over time, and there's also been some concern about the effect of concentrated fumes from these oils over time. But since I've used essential oils for years without problems, I feel perfectly safe using it even without a lot of ventilation. Much better than OMS, which gives me a headache and can prove toxic over time.Like other essential oils it's great for cleaning crusty brushes. Oh, and it smells like Vaporub!

Awesome stuff. Smells okay, more like camphor than lavender. Solvent cutting action is a bit stronger than turps and at the same time it doens't speed up drying as much as turps. No toxic fumes to worry about so the price is worth it to me.
