I have tried many razors, including expensive ones, but I finally found this wonderful razor. It gives a very effective shave from the first time and is not aggressive at all. I recommend it to everyone. It is very safe and effective and does not leave scratches on the skin. Thank you Muhle .

Closer shave, needs less pressure, but not really any more dangerous, the blade doesn't stick out any more, just the comb has deeper spacing.

All I want to say - if you’re not sure whether you want the open comb or not - you definitely should try. There’s no going back

Shaving has always been a problem for me whether wet shaving, or dry - no matter what, I suffered from skin irritation and ingrown hairs. In the last year and a half I begun experimenting with Double Edged Safety Razors and have tried a few different brands and configurations from mild, to aggressive, adjustable to fixed, and have even experimented with shimming both over and under the blade, not to mention different blade brands and blade ‘corking’. Here’s what I’ve learned…First of all, it should go without saying that what works for my face may not work for yours. When I first started out, I thought my problem was simply sensitive skin and curly hair - this journey has taught me better. In reality, my skin is apparently pretty tough, my facial hair is very wiry and stiff (regardless of softeners and preshaves and hydration - which all help tremendously). My facial hair is also pretty curly and in many places grows parallel to the skin and in several different directions (that said, beard mapping is an excellent tool that needs to be used as well). Adjustable razors have been a boon to me in allowing me to experiment with different blade gaps, and in turn, blade shimming has been helpful in finding the blade angles that work best for me on razors that seem to fall short of my own personal needs. All of that said, here is a general summary of what I have discovered about razor aggression/efficiency between the Muhle R41, Merkur Futur, Merkur Progress, Merkur Slant, and the Parker Semi Slant:What I have found along this journey of mine is that ‘aggressive’ razors and settings, produce vastly better and more comfortable shaves, FOR ME, with little to no skin irritation (as evidenced using an Alum block). This is what I eventually found works with my combination of skin and hair - and if you have coarse wiry hair and struggle with ingrown and parallel hair growth, it may also work for you!Merkur Futur:Wide open at setting 6 to start, 2nd pass at 5, then 3rd pass at 4 and cleanup at 3. The Futur is an excellent razor, but seems to be more prone to nicks (especially around the nose and mouth) than the Progress which seems to result from the head geometry. If I’m especially carful around the nose, I can get by without any problems, but getting just that right angle at such a high aggression can be a bit more difficult than with Merkur’s other adjustable (below). The Future is known as an aggressive razor and even at its lowest setting is much more aggressive than many other razors. For me it works well overall, but doesn’t offer what I would call a ‘comfortable’ shave as there is quite a bit of ‘blade feel’ on it at all settings comparatively. To be frank though, ‘comfort’ comes secondary to getting a good shave without causing any major irritation. My only major gripe is that cleaning the Futur is a bit more of a hassle than with the other designs mentioned here - this is mostly because I like to completely disassemble and oil every time which isn’t completely necessary.Merkur Progress:In my opinion, this design is superior to the Futur and would, I think, be an excellent razor for just about anyone (although I wish it was grippier and came with a metal adjustment knob for appearance sake). The Progress, truly can go from ‘Mild to Wild’ with an immense degree of adjustability! Settings on the Merkur Progress start at 1 and work all the way to 5, then as you continue to rotate the adjustment knob, you go to +1 all the way through +5 (in other words, settings 6 through 10. If you continue to rotate the knob, you can actually squeeze out an 11 and 12, but I’d stop there before the screw reaches its limit and the head becomes loose and unsafe! In the lowest setting, the razor behaves like a mild Edwin Jagger 89, at setting 8 it’s around the max setting (6) on the Futur. I found that setting 10 works well for me as a starting point, working down a level with each pass. More comfortable and maneuverable than the Futur with slightly less blade feel and a design that is much easier to clean (especially if you remove the pressure ring from the knob assembly that keeps it from coming out of the handle, that way the whole thing simply threads off and is a cinch to clean and oil.Although these razors and settings were working pretty well for me, I was seeking something that offered a bit more comfort and safety in a DE razor that had less blade feel and exposure, and could still deliver a decent shave given my particular situation.Merkur and Parker Slant Razors:Although these razors did a better ‘more efficient’ job than a mild or medium standard DE razor, I found them to be much less aggressive than my needs demanded and caused me irritation due to a need for increased pressure. I also found that the slant made following my particular crazy hair growth patterns a bit more difficult, resulting in an increase of ingrown hairs. All in all I would say that these razors would be an excellent option for someone seeking more efficiency out of a less aggressive razor. That is, higher cutting performance (due to the slant) without increasing the blade gap or ‘blade feel’. Sadly, I found these both to be far too mild to give me an adequate shave.Muhle r41:When ‘aggressive razors’ are the topic, the Muhle r41 always seems to hit the top of the list (or there about). When I saw that Muhle offered the r41 head sold separately as a replacement part, I figured it would be a good way to try out another option at a much lower cost (seeing that I could use my Parker or Edwin Jagger handles - not to mention a host of others if so desired). So with that in mind I purchased the r41 Traditional head and mounted it on my own EJ handle. The result? I think I’ve found the solution I’ve been looking for! The Muhle r41 feels to me, like a much less aggressive razor than I’ve been using (Futur at setting 6, Progress at 10). There is very little blade feel comparatively and is much more comfortable to use. But more importantly, I have not sacrificed anything on the quality of the shave itself!!! The r41 cuts through my stubble like the Progress at 10, but feels to my face like the Progress on 3 - and all I can say, is that Muhle has definitely done something right in this razor! No, it apparently isn’t for everyone, and I still hear how aggressive it seems to be for many people all over the internet. However, in my book, it’s the definition of efficiency without excessive aggression. In comparison, the blade exposure is minimal and the blade gap (while hard to judge on this open tooth razor), seems minimal - but this thing just does the job anyway! Hopefully this post will be helpful to others with the same struggle!
