Comes simply but nicely packaged. You get the tamper, a silicone stand, and two additional springs (15lb and 30lb) with a hex key. The tamp is per-configured with a 25lb spring. The quality is there. All parts are well designed, machined, and finished. Operation is smooth. The overall look is a sharp and stylish flat black with minimal white branding. This particular variation comes with a striking, multi-hued striped wood. I'll admit that I wasn't sure about this at first. But was surprised that the stripes seemed to tie in well with the various accent woods on different coffee station components I've collected over time. But looks aren't everything. This is a tool. What does it do? Consistency is the cornerstone of a good shot. This tamp helps manage variables in two ways. The first feature is the collar that fits over the rim of your basket. This guides the action to keep the tamp level throughout the process. It is managed by its own spring to keep contact and flush as it guides the tamp to create the puck. The main feature is the calibrated spring. As we tamp down, the calibrated spring maintains a consistent pressure on the forming puck. Once we come close to or actually bottom out on the compression, we know we've delivered a consistent compression time after time. Again - we can adjust that compression by swapping out our compression spring for a lighter or heavier option.Swapping springs is easy and straight forward with a well documented card. Cleaning should be just as easy. Though I found that the finish and 58.5mm diameter leaves most grinds in the basket - even when my current bean demanded a finer grind than I usually use.One caveat. This comes down to preference. I prefer a design that has a "break" in the action when one hits the calibrated pressure - akin to a torque wrench. This design provides constant pressure with no break. Some prefer this action. So it really depends on individual taste. All in all - this is an quality device that should provide years of function and sit proud in any kitchen, office, or wherever you set up your coffee station.

"I wanna be dirty."This is Normcore's Titanium PVD Coated with Colorful Wood Handle variant of its Spring Loaded Tamper V4. At about 315 grams, this tamper is lighter than its metal handle counterpart - and other non-oem non-plastic tampers I've used. The tamper comes with extra springs that provide more and less force than the pre-installed 25 pound spring. They will provide more and less resistance when tamping, respectively. I have not noticed a big difference, taste wise, between the different springs though. The biggest advantage to using this type of tamper over the normal non-spring version is the self-leveling collars on the spring loaded tampers. The collars make level tamps easy by keeping the base level when tamping. You will feel the spring kicking in when the base make contact with the coffee grounds as you press down on the handle to tamp. Note that there isn't a click, or any indication that the pre-determined force is reached. The tamper will let you keep pushing down until the coffee grounds won't compress any more.My daily driver tamper is also a self-leveling tamper with a spring, but that spring is only used to pull the leveling collar back into position. I can feel the resistance of the coffee grounds as I tamp. I feel it less with this (and other) spring/calibrated tampers. I did not notice any major differences, in taste or extraction time, between Normcore's tamper and my tamper - using the same coffee and grind settings. The Titanium PVD coating may be coffee grounds resistant, but coffee grounds will stick to it. If the same coating on my Normcore distributor is any indication, the coating will wear down over time. I prefer the flat tamper base over the ripple bases due to the ripple bases tend to trap coffee grounds between the ridges. I have used both types of bases and even though I didn't notice any taste differences, I like less cleaning. At the end of the day, I miss the more transparent feel of the compressed coffee grounds when using this tamper. If you are already an experienced espresso maker, this is a "nice to have" tamper, but not necessary. If you are new to espresso and don't have a decent tamper, this one is a good (but somewhat pricey) one to consider.
