Purchased to assist with bookbinding. Mineral oil had to be removed to avoid damaging the book paper / fabric. Some of the mitres arrived rusty, and without the oil they will only get worse. Should have bought the plastic type. Very disappointed.

These book-binding corner aides are simply plain cut metal mitres which are designed to make marking, cutting, and folding the book-binding cloth at corners easier, quicker and more precise than using only one’s eye and guesswork. They come in a transparent plastic box which is easy to open and close. The box keeps the mitres conveniently together and stops you losing them. The mitre sizes are 2 of each of 2mm, 3mm, 5mm, and 10 mm which covers most book sizes.I indulge in book-binding, both repairing old damaged books, as well as very small production runs of new books. All the processes are done by hand, so these mitres compliment the hand crafted process. Up until now I have cut the mitre corners by eye, which is not a very precise method, so I was interested to try out these simple mitre guides. Testing them in practice, I found they were effective in marking a more exact cut line and made each finished corner look more precise and professional. They are nothing more than simple basic templates, but do work effectively.The mitres are claimed to be stainless steel and non-rusting, but they look different from most stainless steels that I have encountered before. The surface colour is grey, not shiny silver. Time will tell if they corrode or not. The amount of metal at the top apex is very thin, especially in the 2mm size, and looks like it might break sometime. However, the stainless steel is a strong metal so hopefully it will be OK. The top edge has a metric scale in black paint printed on it, which may or may not be useful to you. Overall, I am glad to have this set of mitres, they are useful in my book-binding enterprise.

These neat little pieces of kit are going to make cutting mitres so much easier and more accurate. I make my own sketchbooks and journals, and only have very basic bookbinding items. My mitre cutting is not the neatest, so these will be a great help without having to worry about super accurate measuring with a ruler.There are four widths to suit the thickness of the boards, so everything covered, and being of steel they will last forever. They come in pairs in a handy plastic box for storage.Pleased I got these.
