I recently purchased this Osprey backpack for my son, who needed a durable and spacious bag for college. He carries a laptop, books, and various other essentials, and this backpack has proven to be the perfect solution. From the moment we unpacked it, we could tell it was built with premium materials. The construction is top-notch, with attention to every detail, which makes it feel incredibly sturdy and reliable. One of the standout features of this backpack is the design. It's ideal for his bike rides to and from campus, offering a snug and secure fit thanks to the torso straps. These straps help keep the pack tightly fastened to his body, even when he's riding at higher speeds, so there's no shifting or discomfort. As someone who needs to carry his laptop daily, he also loves the added protection it provides. The padded compartment is great for keeping his device safe and secure. The Metron also excels in organization, with ample space and compartments to store everything from books and notebooks to pens, pencils, and other daily essentials. The internal layout ensures that everything has its place, making it easy for him to access what he needs throughout the day.Beyond college use, my son is also an avid hiker, and he’s found this backpack to be equally suited for his outdoor adventures. It’s just the right size for packing gear for a day-long hike in the mountains, providing enough space for clothes, snacks, and any other hiking essentials. That said, there’s one minor drawback: he wishes the pack included an external water bottle pouch. While it can fit a bottle inside, he prefers having quick access to it on the outside of the bag. Additionally, the Metron is slightly heavier and a bit larger than other backpacks we’ve owned in the past, due to its high-quality construction, which some may consider a trade-off.While the price is certainly higher than other backpacks, the quality difference is evident. We usually replace backpacks almost every year, but I have no doubt this one will last for many years without issue. The investment might seem steep upfront, but it’s likely to pay for itself over time in terms of durability and longevity. In conclusion, the Osprey Metron 24L commuter backpack is a fantastic choice for anyone who needs a reliable, high-quality bag for daily use and outdoor adventures. If you're looking for a backpack that will last, provide superior protection for your electronics, and offer excellent storage options, this is definitely worth the investment.

I have several other Osprey packs that are intended for camping, and those packs are really supportive, comfortable, and breathe well. My work commuting pack was starting to get long in the tooth, so I decided to try out this pack to see if it offered the same benefits. While it is less over-engineered than the camping packs, this Osprey commuter bike pack offers many of the same comfort and organizational features as their camping packs. While I do not bike much, most of the features designed around biking would come in benefit when riding public transit. The pack features a semi-rigid back panel with mesh and some contouring to improve airflow around the back. The straps are molded and padded well and highly-adjustable and include straps to secure across the strap and waist for extra support. There are two straps across the face of the pack, so that once everything is inserted into the pack, the straps can be tightened to ensure that everything lays together tight up against the back instead of flopping around. The biggest feature though - pockets, pockets, pockets. I have had many packs with multiple pockets, but this pack is very well thought out. The pocket closest to the back has two internal pockets to slip in a laptop and tablet. I was a little concerned that my laptop would not fit because it is a 16" laptop that is a little more flat and long than most 16", but it fit in snug. I tend to prefer a little more padding on my laptop while commuting, so I also tried putting my laptop in with its separate protective sleeve; it fit, although definitely stretched that pocket to its limit. Opposite of the laptop pocket is a zip pocket designated to store shoes. While it is somewhat of a rounded pocket, it could easily be used to store other items. The next pocket in front of that is a much more slim pocket, but it does run the entire length of the bag top to bottom. Within that pocket, there is an organizer section with little pockets for pens or other small gear. Then in front of that is another smaller pocket with a rain flap for easy access maybe for a phone or other item you might want to grab quickly. Below at the same level is a flap pocket to enable sliding something in. And as if that was not enough, there is a little zip pocket hidden alongside the left strap to allow storing something like a phone or wallet out of sight but very easily grabbed by reaching under your left armpit. The organizational flexibility alone is worth the price of admission. Add to that the very comfortable strap system typical of Osprey packs, and this pack is an excellent commuter pack.

This is a great practically-minded bike commuter bag. It's thoughtfully designed for what you'll need for that use case, and exactly that. The flipside of that is that while it can pull double-duty as a light hiking pack or a travel personal-item, it's not ideal for either of those (which I'll get into later), and the styling is a bit pedestrian. To me, that's a worthwhile tradeoff for its commuter-friendly features, but if you're a super-frequent-flier or looking for a more outdoorsy-forward or fashion-forward bag, you may want to look elsewhere.I love Osprey gear; I have a Farpoint 55 and Talon 22 already. I'll mostly compare this to the Talon 22 I use for family hikes and the Timbuk2 Authority Deluxe it's replacing as my daily commuter bag.- Commuting (vs the Authority Deluxe)Compared to the Authority Deluxe, the Metron definitely won't win any style awards; the fabric colors available (black and brown, when i purchased) and the buckles and straps are utilitarian and a bit sporty, where the Authority (at least in the gray/black I own) looks a bit more professionally at home in a modern office. Neither is going to fit in with a suits-and-ties shop, anyways, but it's something to note if you're a bit more fashion-conscious.The Authority also has the edge for frequent flyers; a strap to attach to luggage handles plus a separate laptop compartment for easier TSA access without potentially spilling all your gear, and an easier-access front pocket that can hold your passport. However, I was immediately struck by a few things, especially how light the Metron feels, even when fully loaded. The design itself is lighter, but the better-designed strapping system on the Metron keeps the load flat against your back, which makes it feel even lighter. The Authority's bottom straps look nicer than the Metron's cross-straps, but functionally there's no contest. The Metron's really do keep the load tight, where the Authority's feel like they're just for looks and basically just make the bag a half-inch shorter, rather than keeping the contents tight. The Metron also has great subtle reflective attachment points for stuff like my Nitecore mini clip light, which the Authority lacks. And the helmet attachment system is clutch, considering "bike to the train" is a common commute modality for me; the Authority just left my helmet flopping around.Since I bike or take the train about 50x as often as I hop on a plane, the Osprey has the edge here overall for me given those commuter-optimized features.- Hiking (vs the Talon 22)Compared to the Talon 22, a few things jump out. The Talon 22's better designed for water carrying (especially if you want to use a reservoir/bladder) and has functionally useful hip straps that shift some load -- the Metron's tiny waist/hip strap is a joke by comparison, but thankfully it's removable. The Talon also has better ventilation, but at the cost of a bit of capacity; it's also lacking the organizational options and the laptop protection of the Metron. I wouldn't hesitate to use the Metron for some light half-day-hikes, but if you're schlepping out for a long summer outing or are carrying gear for the whole family, you'd probably appreciate the hydration, ventilation, and better hip-straps of something like the Talon. On the reverse, while I've used the Talon to carry a laptop around town in a pinch, I'd be very hesitant to use it as a commuter bag without better protection and organization; it's also just styled more "outdoorsy" than the more subtle Metron.Pros:- Lightweight- Great strapping and elastic system to keep load flat and tight when biking while allowing a lot of expandability- Great pocket organization- Helmet lock and bike-lock-holding spots- a few bike light and gear attachment points but without making you look like some sort of cosplaying tactical paramilitary wannabe- Clever raincover that doubles as bottom-of-the-bag padding, but is also easily removable if you're traveling light- Good laptop protectionCons:- Not the most stylish bag- Why even bother with this thin waist/hip strap?- Excess strap lengths can hang loose, especially if bag is lightly packed- Not an ideal bag for flying or hiking, but fine in a pinch for either- Front pockets can be fiddly to access when straps are buckled down

I very much enjoy this backpack! It features plenty of considerate design choices that can make any commuter happy! It includes plenty of storage and compartments that are all mostly easily accessible even with gloves, as well as reflective details that increase driver awareness around you, including a dedicated loop for blinker lights. It is quite water resistant as-is but it does include a handy rain cover for added water resistance. I especially enjoyed the mesh lining on the back that also has a great ergonomic foam shape for allowing excellent breathability. The backpack strap is also very robust with great padding and additional meshing, including an adjustable sternum strap and waist strap for even greater support and comfort! The interior of the backpack is also quite robust and very spacious. As implied, the Metron 24 offers 24 liters of volume which can easily accommodate a 16-inch laptop as well as other accessories. It is easy to access the interior as the zipper can go almost all the way around in a U shape. Visibility is great with the contrasting interior lining, and it also has a separate compartment dedicated to dirty clothes and shoes, which are aspects I have never even considered in my long time spent commuting! There are even more pockets on the front for additional accessories or sunglasses, as well as a zippered pocket and dedicated bottle pocket on the sides for quick access to both important items and large bottles. additional straps on the backpack can also be used to compress the backpack for additional stability.Overall, there is just so much going on and so much to love about this backpack that it might be easier to list what it doesn't have! It has been a significant improvement over my previous backpack that it is quite easy to justify the pricetag. Your back will thank you!

From a couple of JanSport backpacks in the 90s to a 13 year run with a "Swiss Gear" backpack most recently, I've been a daily backpack user most of my life. They were often found at thrift stores or issued by my employer. This is the first pack that I actually researched and looked forward to getting! It has not disappointed. Before I gush, let me point out two annoying things that I've found. There than these, it's about perfect.1. The fabric is high quality and tough but it's also kind of rough. It tends to pick up lint, fuzz and dirt from everyday use. I haven't been in any real dirt environments but it's looking dirty like I've had it out on the farm or something.2. I knew this going in but given the shape of the pack it does not stand up on its own at all. It falls over away from the straps. I wish that wasn't the case but it's just how the pack is shaped. It looks great so I guess you can't have it all.The compression straps can be used to hold it on the telescoping handle of your suitcase.I was skeptical of the general shape. It's larger at the top and tapers down at the bottom. I've fully converted! I was wrong lol. On a plane under the seat in front of you, it's ideal. The large part of the pack has the big zipper that allows for better access to the most items.Given I got so many years out of a cheap bag, this one could last me for the next 20 years!"Buy once, cry once."
