I really wanted to like this, but the screen appears to be a low quality TN display, and I ended up returning it. I love that it can play GameBoy cartridges, but I'm so used to high quality IPS screens which are easy on my eyes. TN displays like this one are hard to focus on, and seem 'offset' in a weird way that makes my eyes start to ache after only a few minutes. This would be an easy 5/5 if it had an IPS display, because there are so few devices that can play GameBoy cartridges

Of all the suing that sue happy Nintendo does every day, why is this even on the market? And how are they able to legally put a screen that is as blinding as this one in a device and not get sued for maiming anyone who tries the device? It's like looking at the sun. And worse, like the sun, you can't turn it off. At least my copy you could not. Button went in and stayed in...forever, until i returned it a few days later. Couldn't coax it out . couldn't force the board below internally to read anything other than a few buttons. It felt like it was printed in someone's garage on their brand new plastic 3D printer that usually prints illegal fire arms and parts. It kind of smelled like meth, but that might have been a cathode ray crammed in there, this thing had no semblance, justice, or respect for anyone's ocular vernacular. It might have been developed as a secret weapon people. Anyways, my copy sucked....money right out of my pocket and i returned it days later regardless if i could charge it and get into menus and /or a game...i couldn't shut it off. What ridiculous kind of flaw is that and who ordered it into manufacturing?

The main reason I bought this was to play my original gameboy games. It does not support them. It doesn't even recognize that a cartridge is in the slot.The build quality seems pretty good. It doesn't feel like you're going to break it by holding it. The manual is worthless. It basically has a diagram that tells you the names of the buttons on the device, and also says not to get it wet.I am returning it for the main reason above.

The Neocade entered the market with some good ideas that should be selling points for the system. These are:Sturdy build quality, with a nice compfortable dpadLicensed games as opposed to pirated softwareSolid emulation of SNES, NES, GBA and GB in these built-in gamesA functioning Game Boy Advance cartridge reader and the ability to play GBA carts as well as use save states with them.Unfortunately it blots its copybook with the extremely poor choice of a cheap TFT screen that reflects light badly and suffers from poor viewing angles when not viewed dead on. This is one of the worst screens I have used in the last ten years and a baffling choice for a handheld of this price range.Given the investment in the GBA slot and the licensed games it seems very disappointing that not even an LCD screen was considered, let alone the IPS standard that something like the Super Pocket has (for a lower price). Lastly the placement of the L&R buttons on the face of the unit is a very poor choice. Trying to use these in a game like the built in Street Racer is almost impossible in game.Now let's talk about the disingenuous marketing. Despite having some really unique things going for it in the GBA slot and the 40 licensed PIKO games, the marketing cannot help slip into the old patterns of exaggeration and outright false advertising common for off brand handhelds.Firstly, original Game Boy/Game Boy Color cartridges like the ones pictured in the marketing DO NOT WORK on this system. This seems a missed opportunity given that the system can clearly emulate Game Boy (two of its build in games are GB) and the cartridges do fit. Why was this feature omitted and why does the marketing claim it is possible? Was it not enough to correctly advertise the GBA compatibility?Secondly, the SD card reader is completely useless, failing to recognise anything that you put onto it. Again the marketing falsely claims that this can be used to run emulated games (somewhat contradicting the stated aim of avoiding piracy but there you go!), instead it has no apparent use. Emails to Neocade's support remain unanswered. So the true purpose of this slot remains unknown.All this being said, the Neocade is still fun to play, the emulation of the Piko games is good and the GBA cart works well and is a fun and unique addition. However for the sub-par quality of the screen, the unnecessary false-marketing of the range of gameboy carts that are compatible and the price which is much higher than competing products like the IPS-screen Super Pocket and the lack of clarity over the SD card reader, I have sadly had to deduct marks from the overall score.If you can get this on a discount you could have some fun with it and if whoever is behind Neocade ever release a firmware update that fixes the above issues then I will consider reappraising this review.
