Revolution [VHS]

Ein typischer Film seiner Zeit. Für einen modernen Film wäre er zu langatmig, aber zu seiner Zeit voll in Ordnung.

Ich kannte den Film noch von der Videokassetten Zeit. Gefällt mir sehr gut! Die Besetzung für die Darsteller war auch sehr gut ausgesucht!

Ich weiß NICHT woran es liegt, doch EIGENTLICH mag ich Filme, welche im 18.- oder 19. Jahrhundert spielen GAR NICHT.Allerdings klang die Filmbeschreibung so interessant, dass ich mich dazu entschied, den Film zu kaufen.Und DAS bereue ich NICHT.Die eigentliche Story – drumherum – ist VIELLEICHT ETWAS vage – für Jene, die WIRKLICH etwas historisch Detailliertes über den 1776er stattgefundenen Unabhängigkeitskrieg erfahren möchten. Keine Frage.Doch HIER geht es – MEINES Erachtens – in ERSTER Linie darum, das einzelne Schicksal einer Familie aufzuzeigen. Und DIESES Vater-Sohn-Gespann erlebt nun einmal SO – und NICHT anders – diese Zeitepoche.Mir PERSÖNLICH – die sich mit dieser Ära eh schwertut, kam dies sehr gelegen. NICHT aus Desinteresse am Eigentlichen, sondern weil es für mich interessant war, einmal solch eine Perspektive anschauen zu dürfen.Der Film AN SICH bekommt von mir 4 Sterne von 5 möglichen.Doch die Darstellung Pacinos – als einen, gerade in dieser Zeit, fürsorglichen und liebevollen Vater – in einer Epoche der Rohheit (anmerkend, dass damals viele Eltern SEHR konservativ und autoritär waren, wo oft die Liebe zum eigenen Kind – zumindest ÄUSSERLICH – SCHEINBAR auf der Strecke zu blieben schien. Denn ZUMEIST waren wohl eher Strenge, Gehorsam und Respekt gefragt (was das Eine vom Anderen ja doch nicht ausschließen muss)), ist so UNGLAUBLICH RÜHREND und GLAUBWÜRDIG dargestellt, dass ich allein DAFÜR noch einen Stern vergebe und es somit 5 Sterne ergibt.Danke an Amazon für diesen Klassiker!

This was only my second order with Rarewaves UK, the BD disc was damaged and they were amazing. They sent me a replacement straight away. Al Pacino is so underrated in this movie. Great Story. A flawed masterpiece.

Hab ich mir besser vorgestellt

Meine Rezension bezieht sich nur auf die Bildqualität.Hatte mir diesen Film vor Jahren vom Hersteller "Eurovideo" gekauft. Die Bildqualität lag weit unter VHS Niveau und das Format stimmte nicht. Das haben schon mehrere Käufer in den vorhergehenden Rezensionen beanstandet, wobei ich an deren Kritiken nicht feststellen konnte, ob die Neuauflage von Kinowelt eventuell besser sei. Da Kinowelt aber eigentlich immer gute Qualität liefert, habe ich mir diese Neuauflage noch einmal bestellt. Die Bildqualität ist meiner Meinung nach noch mieser als die von Eurovideo. Streifen (Überlagerungen) im Bild, Schatten an den Konturen, unscharf, als ob das ganze mit einem defekten Antennenkabel vom Fernsehen aufgenommen wurde. Das Bildformat stimmt allerdings.Fazit: Finger weg sowohl von der Eurovideo als auch der Kinowelt Fassung und warten, bis dieser schöne Film hoffentlich mal in richtiger DVD Qualität angeboten wird!

Me ha gustado mucho, pero no me ha gustado que solo esté en Ingles y que no lleve audio en castellano, me parece una vergüenza.He intentado comprar otra película de La Revolución francesa y lo mismo, solo en francés y no la voy a comprar.

Ein weiteres Beispiel für das eigenartige Schicksal der Kinski, mit guten Drehbüchern und Regisseuren trotz ihrer tadellosen darstellerischen Leistungen beim großen Publikum nicht so recht anzukommen. Ich finde sie großartig und liebe sie in den vielen Rollen, in denen ich sie gesehen habe. Als Daisy hat sie hier allerdings nicht viel mehr als dekorativ zu wirken, was sie mühelos tut. Al Pacino ist zu Recht berühmt und man darf bei ihm regelmäßig mit guten Leistungen rechnen. So auch hier. Die Geschichte aus dem Befreiungskrieg ist ansprechend mit eindrücklichen Bildern geschildert. Kulissen und Kostüme wirken authentisch und vermitteln ein plastisches Bild vom Leben unter den damaligen Bedingungen. Trotz seiner wenigen plakativen Auftritte gibt Sutherland einen deutlichen Eindruck von Haltung und Brutalität der englischen Streitkräfte wieder. Gut.

This movie was reportedly a critical and commercial failure on release. However this edition is the director's cut and to me it is nothing short of breathtaking not to mention haunting. With this edition you get both a blu ray and dvd copy. It is also possible to just watch the theatrical version and subtitles are available on the different versions. In addition a detailed booklet is included containing information on the film and reviews by critics. There is also a very interesting conversation between the director Hugh Hudson and Al Pacino in which they discuss the negative reaction to the film. It is very clear from this that the rejection of the film by critics and the public deeply wounded Hugh Hudson and Al Pacino. It is good to hear them both defend the film and the vision they had when making Revolution. Altogether is edition is very handsome and great value for money.I believe the main differences between the director's cut and the theatrical version are the inclusion of a narration by Al Pacino plus a different ending. I have not watched the theatrical version in full though I can imagine that the removal of the narration as well as the different ending (much happier) certainly must make this a much poorer film.The basic plot sees Tom Dobb (Pacino) a former indentured servant from Scotland in North America, dragged into rebellion against the British. When the film begins Tom is a furrier who has an intimate knowledge of the land because of his work. He pulls into New York in his boat and his life is changed forever by the American rebels when his boat is requisitioned. His son, Ned (Sid Owen) is then press ganged by the revolutionary forces and Tom must take up arms to save his son from almost certain death. He is a reluctant warrior. His attitude changes throughout the course of the film and he begins to acquire an American identity as well as a better understanding of himself. The character of Daisy McConnahay (Nastassja Kinski) is of a young girl from a wealthy family whose loyalty is to the rebels and she is seduced by the drama of rebellion. She crosses the path of Tom and becomes enamoured of him when she mistakenly comes to believe he has "fought for a cause". Illiteracy is also raised in the film and Tom's desire to overcome it. So the film is as much about personal revolution as it is about revolutionary war.The attention to detail is fantastic and as a period drama it is very convincing. This is mainly because the majority of Revolution was filmed in King's Lynn in Norfolk which has maintained its heritage and therefore convinces as 18th century America. Many of the shots and scenery used are simply stunning. There is a real poetry to some of the staging in particular the first major battle scene which is both terrifying and strangely beautiful.To me the acting is first class. Al Pacino is sincere as a man of no standing living in extraordinary times. I have seen that much of the criticism of the film was aimed at the casting of Al Pacino and they way he delivered his dialogue. It may be true that at first he looks a bit too swarthy to play a Scotsman in the 18th century but I think that it is only because he had been to an extent typecast by that time that people only wanted to see him in crime films. In the conversation referred to above the director states he wanted someone who had come from a poor background, who was like a "rat" who literally emerges from below to become an unlikely hero. The presence of Al Pacino certainly prevents any real romanticism of the subject matter. His accent was apparently well researched before it was adopted for the film and although it is initially difficult to follow it does become clearer. The use of a distinctly non modern accent that reflects the obvious melting pot of accents at that time just makes the film more authentic. His narration is not the typical brash type of an inner monologue that you often find in films. Here Al Pacino lovingly whispers the words that express his torment, his fears, his confusion and worldview. There is also good support from Nastassja Kinski, Sid Owen and Donald Sutherland. The minor characters also add to the richness of the film with Jesse Birdsall playing a British officer with convincing menace and brutality.This is a multi layered tale about British history and its imagery and symbolism resonates strongly. This maligned and underrated film is wonderful.

Über die Qualität des Films bzw. der DVD ist weiter oben in der offiziellen Bewertung schon alles gesagt:Die Qualität bewegt sich auf durchschnittlichen Niveau, wobei die Farbzeichnung gut gefällt.Ton: Der Track ist passabel, aber nicht mit dem Klang neuer Filme zu vergleichen.Man muss hierbei bedenken, dass der Film aus dem Jahr 1985 stammt und nicht aus 2012. Trotzdem hätte man sicher noch einiges an Qualität herausholen können.Dem Film tut das aber keinen Abbruch. Es sind sogar etliche Szenen drin, die in der TV-Fassung nicht gezeigt wurden.Alles in allem ein sehr passabler Film über die US-amerikanische Revolution. - Solche Filme gibt es ja leider nicht wirklich viele.Sehenswert. Zuschauer mit geschichtlichem Hintergrundwissen haben aber deutlich mehr davon als andere...

I chose this film over Gibson's The Patriot for my son to view as part of his course on American history and literature, with no regrets.The film has a Dickensian feel - narrow dirty alleys in New York and Philadelphia, rain and mud and overcast skies and rugged raw landscape out in the countryside, fires in nooks and crannies of the old cities in the night, characters on the British and American side coming and going until you are dizzy, the filth and grime and misery of war, the apparently hopeless cause gradually coalescing into something able to endure and transcend. Unlike The Crossing - which is also a fine film - Revolution centres on the ordinary people caught up in the war, not the officers and commanders. Nothing here about grand strategy or noble ideals, just the blood and pain and confusion and astonishment of birth. Impeccable acting and sets, this film made me feel dread and discomfort and discouragement as well as scraps of hope - having experienced a few mobs in my own life, and the edge of war, the mob scenes and battle scenes they staged in this film made me uneasy at the noise and chaos and random violence. I have a very great hunch the American Revolution would have looked this way to me if I had been caught up in it.As Platoon captured the fear and confusion of war in Vietnam without a great overarching perspective, so too does Revolution, although that great overarching perspective of the ideals of American independence is not utterly buried and lost, there are important scenes and some significant dialogue that bring it to the fore throughout the film without turning the script into a July 4th celebration.No Hollywood formula wrap here. And the theme Mel borrowed of a reluctant father fighting for his son started with this movie, not with his. The difference between Mel's film and Pacino's is that Pacino's really is a work of art, a piece of great cinema, and the story of a father and his son and the revolution in this film is far more credible and enduring and profound. It moves more slowly at times, yes, but the movement gathers such momentum and force that the imagination is far more powerfully impacted than would have been the case otherwise.Revolution is for those who like great theatre and the acting and scripts that are part of that sort of entertainment and its flesh and blood and depth. Lots of heart and soul here. Five stars.
