Every banjo should have one. Just take your time with the installation and make the small holes with the small drill bit.

My Stelling Red Fox has "railroad spikes" for raising the pitch of the fifth string when working with a capo on the other strings. I found these inconvenient and unreliable. This capo is a great solution and works much better. But it requires some skill in mounting it. You may want to have a qualified repair person install it for you.

This is a really neat little capo bar similar to one factory-mounted on an eatly 1960s Ode that I have. I was really looking forward to installing it on my least expensive banjo -- the Deering Goodtime. Shubb does a great job of warning the buyer not to let the capo come off the rail, and in fact, it is easy to keep it on the rail even after you remove the handy shipping wires they send to keep it from coming off the rail. Very nice. The quality seems sufficient as well.Trouble is, in testing this before installing it I discovered that, like another reviewer said, it will scratch the side of the neck. It's not worth it to me to ruin the finish so I'm sending it back. What a shame; it seems really nice, but my other banjos (other than the aforementioned Ode) have railroad spikes and those work well for me so I'm inclined to just have those installed.

Shubb makes quality parts, and this is no exception. It's much better than the little "nails" or "railroad spikes" that are often used. It's easy to slide up and down, going to the fifth fret, so you can play in A, B, or C in addition to G. It doesn't pull the string out of tune, and the clamp is secure with no buzzing. However, when mine was first put on according to the instructions, leaving 1/16 inch clearance, it buzzed like crazy. I had to raise the thing up, making new holes in the side of my neck, and I also had to move it toward the nut to avoid the tiny screws just going back into the same little holes. Finally it worked, but not quite perfectly. It still buzzed just a little, but any amount is too much for the 5th string, so I had to file out the groove a bit to lower the string. Now it works perfectly, but it needs careful installation with attention to this possibility.

Since losing our drummer to a Sunday morning job, our Praise Band started trending to a different sound. Our leader (and excellent lead guitarist) had his old Gibson acoustic reworked, and my background in folk, spirituals, gospel, and a little bluegrass has had an increasing influence on our selections. Ken is stretching himself with slide work on the old Gibson and I've begun to play my 50s era Gibson 5-string open back at least one piece most Sunday mornings. I'm not an especially good banjo player, but do OK if we stick to the keys of G and C. The Shubb 5th-string capo lets me play those tunings in a number of other keys, giving our band a wider range of opportunities. I once had a little screwhead "capo" but that was very limiting and I didn't like the idea of making even more holes in the Gibson's fretboard. The Shubb mounts cleanly and does a great job. The only downside is that the Shubb's bar hides the side markers on the fretboard and makes you know where those frets are. But that is manageable with practice. If you're going to mount it yourself, think long and carefully before drilling holes!
