I had to replace 7 posts and 6 panels and had no tools to do the job so I bought this spade as it had a good reviews. It arrived late about 7pm so whole day wasted :( now to spade itself - looks robust and it's a bit heavy but I managed to bend it while digging hole for 2nd post. I never done any digging before but I'm sure that I'm not a strongman... So while it lasted 7 holes it might not be a forever tool. Anyway it did the job but not met my expectations. Something as heavy as this should not bend. Welding does not look promising either.

Bought this for gardening, and am delighted with it.It stands considerably taller than a normal garden spade, mostly due to the much longer blade. It is easily twice the weight of a garden spade; much of the weight is in the blade, but the strong tubular steel shaft also adds weight. It is hand forged, and the thickness of the steel in the blade is about double that of most modern garden spades. The blade is also slightly irregular in shape and thickness, due to it being hand forged rather than mass produced. Not a problem. Mine was not sharp when it arrived, but a few minutes with an angle grinder put a good edge on it, and I have found that the steel is holding the edge very well, despite use in quite stony soil. For gardening, three things make this stand out over traditional spades. First, the weight of the spade, combined with the cutting edge being only about half as wide as a traditional spade, means that it's easy to concentrate a lot of force in a relatively small area. If you are making planting holes around trees and shrubs you will be able to chop down through roots with much less effort than with a garden spade. Second, if you are planting bulbs that want to go deep, it is much easier to get a deep hole, due to the length of the blade, but it is also much easier to make only one neat and relatively narrow hole, so planting big bulbs like lilies in among existing plants is quicker and neater. Third, it is much stronger than most traditional spades; when you're levering up heavy or compacted soil, you can really put your weight on this without feeling it starting to flex. Modern mass-produced garden spades are flimsy in comparison. For gardeners, it won't replace your traditional spade completely, but it will do some jobs very much better.
