Eines der mit Abstand besten Alben überhaupt neben Iowa eines meiner Favorite Slipknot Alben Für Fans ein absolutes muss nur schade dass der Song Purity nicht drauf enthalten ist aber ansonsten spitze Album :)

It was sometime between January and March of 2000. I recall being home from school, lying on the couch, the TV on to help alleviate my illness. MTV's Return of the Rock, I believe, was the program I was watching. A band, quite unlike any I had ever seen before, were co-hosting. I recall a Clown, specifically, but the other two members slip my mind (I believe Corey and Joey, but I could be incorrect.) The Clown had punched the host of the show in the head. They had a certain persona to them. They were far from what I was used to, being extremely into Hanson a few years prior, and then slowly spiraling the easily accessible hard rock world with 311, Korn, Orgy, and Limp Bizkit.The video for Wait and Bleed appeared. The song sounded slightly familiar, but my attention was squarely drawn to the live video of nine musicians pushing the envelop. The song struck a chord. The video left an imprint. I became fixated. I remember, with very little difficulty, buying Slipknot's self-titled debut from Wal-Mart, unedited. I thought I was getting away with murder, having that album in my possession. I opened the packaging carefully, I put it in my CD player, and a life molded by Slipknot became my destiny.From the electronic and chaotic introduction that feels to last longer than its short running time, I was thrown into the first true personal experience with Slipknot. When (SIC) began, it jolted me. It was fast, and heavy, and loud, and mesmerizing. Never before had my young self experienced such a frantic display of musicianship, and as I tried to follow along with the lyrics sheet, I let myself be transported to Iowa. Seeing the dreary state through the music of these gentlemen. It wasn't hard, as I was living in an unincorporated town in Wisconsin. I felt it. I felt the aggression. I felt the tension. I felt a connection.Eyeless played. Then Wait and Bleed. Surfacing. Spit It Out. I was assaulted via this brash cacophony with no break. Tattered & Torn finally came on, and instead of a nice respite, I was quickly jaunted to a terrifying and dark corner that made me uneasy. Track by track played, with little time to catch myself. By the end of Scissors, I saw the timer continue to count down. I fast forwarded until I heard a bunch of guys just messing around. I heard the people who had created such an influential part of my being. Thinking this was a wrap, the opening squelch of Eeyore came about and I was not done. It was not over. One of my favorite tracks of the album, at the time, was a hidden track. I had spent an hour and change listening to what would become, even seventeen years later for me, the most important album of my life.While Slipknot has always battled with commonfolk saying they are vile, disgusting, and should be banned, the Metal community had always condemned them for being too accessible. After years of diving deep into the labyrinth of Metal sub-genres, I still find that, while my interests have spiraled far from the center that began in 1998, Slipknot is still, for me, an album that I can listen to time and time again and still feel as connected as I did when I was a wee boy of eleven years young.I recall listening to this album in bed day after day, learning each individual piece that made each track come to life. I was inspired to pick up playing bass because of this album, which changed to guitar after an accident that rendered my left arm only half usable, and then transitioned into drums. I spent a year wearing only Slipknot shirts, the only member of my young grade who was interested in music of this type. While I felt alienated, I felt accepted even against where my interests lie and I spent what time I could having people see what was so explosive and astonishing about the group. While most didn't much care, there were some that were converted.Eighteen years after its debut, I feel like this album is still one of the most important of the past twenty years, and while Slipknot has shared massive success, loss, heartbreak, and difficulties, they are still headlining sold out festivals and giving the same amount of blood, sweat, and tears as they did back when they changed my life.

Ich habe mich lange Zeit mit Slipknot schwergetan, und das hing direkt damit zusammen, dass ich ihr paukenschlaghaftiges Ankommen in Europa als Schüler direkt mitbekam - und die maskierte Neunmanntruppe von einem Tag auf den anderen gewissermaßen die Lieblingsband der "coolen Kids“ wurde, inklusive der obligatorischen Uniform aus Barcode-T-Shirt und „Maggot-Aufnäher.Natürlich – eine Band kann nichts für ihre Fans, aber es musste erst das 21. Jahrhundert ins Land gehen, bis ich dem Debüt eine Chance gab – und es war eine durch und durch positive Überraschung: Ich hielt diese Band sehr lange für eine Eintagsfliege, aber das waren sie schon damals nicht, und das werden sie auch in Zukunft nicht sein. Sie haben vielmehr das geschafft, was viele versuchen, aber nur die wenigsten hinkriegen – nämlich einen komplett neuen Sound aus der Taufe zu heben. Zu einem überwiegenden Großteil bestand das NuMetal-Patentrezept darin, so zu singen und so zu spielen wie Korn in frühen Jahren. Slipknot ging fünf Schritte weiter, und kam da an, wo andere es in zehn Jahren nicht schaffen: Diese Mischung aus Industrial, Metal, HipHop und Corey Taylors einmaliger Gesangsleistung (von sauber bis gequält) – das kannte man nicht, so etwas gab es in der Form nicht, und dieses neu erdachte und glänzend umgesetzte Konzept verdient in jedem Fall Respekt.Auf diesem Album hatten Slipknot schon ohne Zweifel ihren Stil gefunden – anders als auf den späteren Alben ist hier allerdings noch eine Messerspitze Punk zu hören, die die Band ebenfalls glänzend in ihr musikalisches Gesamtpanorama integriert hat. Anders als die beiden perfekt durchkonzipierten Nachfolgalben klingt das Debüt für mich nach wie vor ein bisschen anarchisch und weniger düster als die Vorgänger – die Glanzstücke wie Eyeless und Liberate sind energiestrotztende Kraftpakete, aber sie sind keine depressiven Würgegriffe, wie man sie bei IOWA fand.Ich hielt Slipknot damals für eine Modeerscheinung, aber diese Meinung möchte ich nun offiziell revidieren. Das Album ist nun schon über zehn Jahre alt und anders als 98% der damaligen Nö-Metal-Welle ist es mitsamt seinen Schöpfern nicht in der Versenkung verschwunden - diese Musik klingt nicht nur nach wie vor erstaunlich neun und unverbraucht - es haut von der ersten bis zur letzten Minute auch heute noch rein, wie eine Nase CrystalMeth. Ich bin mit diesem Urteil normalerweise nicht sehr großzügig – aber das hier ist wirklich ein Klassiker in der modernen Metalgeschichte.
