I didn't actually use this as intended. This is a left-side lever for a 2/3-speed friction front derailleur. But the lever itself is identical to a RIGHT-HAND lever for a straight-bar thumb shifter. And Sunrace doesn't sell a friction thumb shifter for a rear derailleur (at least not at this quality level). So I bought this AND a 9-speed thumb shifter (SLM96-9) and swapped the levers. Now I have a friction thumb shifter for a rear derailleur, and a right-hand bar-end shifter for a 9-speed rear derailleur (which I don't need yet).I used my makeshift friction-only thumb shifter with a 9-speed rear derailleur and a 10-speed chain and cassette. Everything works perfectly and smoothly. Modern cassettes with 9/10/11 gears have the sprockets placed so close that you just can't have a bad shift, like you would with an old 5 or 6-speed freewheel and friction shifting. Just make sure you use a 9-speed derailleur, even if you have more gears than that, because the cable pull is different for 10/11-speed systems (Shimano). This wasn't my idea, by the way. I read about it on Rivendell's website, where they sell the same modded shifter, for the same reason!
