Der Sever hat einen sehr guten Ersten Eindruck auf mich gemacht. Alles ist sauber verbaut und es gibt keinerlei Mängel oder andere Sachen, über die man bedenken haben sollte.Das System lässt sich recht einfach installieren und hat eine sehr Benutzerfreundliche Oberfläche. Festplatten waren bei meinem Model schon von Anfang an in dem Sever verbaut, können aber recht einfach erweitert werden.Die Struktur des eigenen Betriebssystems kann man schnell lernen, da sie sehr einsteigerfreundlich gestaltet ist.Leider musste ich nach ein paar Tagen feststellen, dass die Leistung des Gerätes für mich als Kreator nicht ausreicht. Ich habe jetzt zu einem schnelleren Modell von Synology gegriffen und bin damit sehr zu frieden.

For basic home or small business archiving and shared use, this is great choice. Based on articles and reviews, I added this unit with 2 Seagate 4TB drives. Installation, setup, interface , and network connection all easy and quick. Had an older HP n’as abt 10 years ago which crashed and was totally non-recoverable, so have shied away from this storage approach. With newest Synology OS (v7) I wonder why we never found more workable systems. Takes a bit of learning for some details of operation (still haven’t figured out Goodsych function, how to update stored folders, etc) but all the basics are quite straightforward. Very pleased.

I've had a Synology DS215J for some time now, and as my DVD collection grew I started transferring some of them to the NAS in lossless .MKV format. I use PLEX as my Media Server, and quickly discovered that my old DS215J couldn't stream my DVDs to my iPad or show the subtitles on my smart TV because it wasn't powerful enough to transcode on the fly.This 218play has a more powerful processor and more memory, so it's much better suited to use as a media server.The box is a fairly unassuming matte black affair, that is actually so matte that dust sticks to it. It's not massively robust, but it's not meant to be - it's got two fragile hard drives in it. It's supposed to be installed and ignored for years, not carted about and dropped. It's as robust as it needs to be.Fitting a pair of brand-new, unformatted HDD drives took about five minutes. All the screws and brackets required are in the box.On logging into the NAS, you are lead through the setup process, which is fairly straightforward. Existing Synology users need to be aware that version of the Diskstation software was released recently, and it's quite a bit different from DSM6. If you are migrating an old PLEX library, be aware. It all works, but it turned out to be easier to start from scratch, move the files over and build a new server. That's a PLEX issue, not a Synology issue. The PLEX software is regularly updated and is working well on my NAS.It is also worth deciding how you want to set up your drives in advance. You have several options, and the default is to create a mirror of your data on both drives using 'Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR)'. That's fine for minimising data loss, but if you want to use the entirety of both drives, you will have to change to JBOD or Basic. My valuable data is on my old NAS, which is configured in SHR, and backed up regularly. This NAS is purely for use as a Media Server so once full the contents won't change much, and I have all the original DVDs, plus a backup drive. I opted to create two Basic storage pools, one on each drive. If one drive fails, the data on the other is still OK. As I was using brand new drives, I asked the NAS to check them as it set up the file structure. That wasn't a great idea as it took forever (over 8 hours), and is not necessary.With the drives set up, it took a couple of minutes to create some Windows Shares, a bit longer to actually map them to Windows because the NAS is hidden by default, and hours to move all my files over through the Ethernet. Many hours.Once all the media had arrived, I installed the latest version of PLEX from their website. Don't use the version Synology give you. Installation was easy. I confused myself setting up PLEX because I now had two media servers on two different NAS, but it wasn't hard to sort out.It took a while to scan all the media and sort it out, but I can now watch DVD quality movies on my iPad over the Internet. We went on holiday for a week, and it was quite cool to be able to watch my DVD collection streaming over the hotel's WiFi from hundreds of miles away. I can also switch the audio track on my TV, or view the subtitles. I have a lot of Anime DVDs, and it's nice to be able to watch them with the original Japanese dialogue and subtitles.It's worth mentioning that the box has two USB 3 sockets on the back. You can plug external drives into these to expand the available storage, and the NAS manages them. Unofficially, you can actually plug a USB 3 hub in, and several drives. The NAS sees all the drives and recognises which is which, even if you unplug them and muddle them up. PLEX can also see them.The 218play is a few years old now and the 220+ has superseded it. The 220+ was out of stock when my 'financial manager' authorised the purchase, so I ordered the 218play, fully expecting to find it was unsuitable and return it. Nope. I'm chuffed to bits with it.Ok, so the 218play can't hardware transcode 4K video. I don't have any 4K video, so I used the £100 difference to spend on bigger hard drives. The 220+ is a superior NAS but I don't need the extra features it offers over the 218play. My old 215J has been running continuously for something like 7 years and is still my main data repository. I expect this 218play will be looking after all my old DVDs for me in another 7 years.

Ich habe nach einem NAS gesucht welches noch bezahlbar ist und 2 Bays hat (mein altes QNAP hat nur eine Bay). Gesucht und gefunden: Das Synology NAS ist günstiger als ein QNAP NAS, dazu habe ich mir eine zweite HD gekauft um Raid1 nutzen zu können (1 Platte kann ausfallen ohne Datenverlust) . Das Enclosure schreckt zuerst ein bisschen ab, da es komplett aus Plastik besteht und recht billig wirkt (da ist QNAP doch hochwertiger). Aber nach dem Einbau der zwei Platten (als Raid1 installiert) geht alles rasant und das NAS ist nach ca. 30 Minuten komplett startbereit! Lesen/Schreiben gehen mit 112 MB/s zur Sache, was absolut ausreichend ist. Ich bin bisher sehr zufrieden mit der Leistung und die Lautstärke ist kaum hörbar (QNAP war bedeutend lauter). Achtung: es gibt 3 verschiedene Versionen des 218 NAS: das 218j (günstigste Version), die "Play" Version und das 218. Ich habe mir zuerst das j bestellt, dann aber doch gelesen das die Play Variante leistungsfähiger ist und das gerade mal für 30 Euro mehr. Also ich kann das Teil nur empfehlen (zum Streamen, Photos verwalten und Backup machen reicht es alle mal).

J'ai fais l'acquisition de cet appareil dans le cas d'un remplacement à neuf suite à sinistre domestique... Malheureusement j'ai du renvoyer celui pris ici chez Amazon car l'assureur a insisté pour que je passe par leur prestataire tiers pour le materièle et la technique (magasin/enseigne concurrent, que je ne nomme donc pas)Mais j'ai donc cet appareil à la maison malgré tout, et je peux donc en parler. Ce n'est pas pour rien que Synology est LA marque de référence pour ce type précis d'équipement reseau/informatique (à savoir serveur NAS); il y a une bonne raison. L'engin est extrèmement complet, remplis à ras bord de fonctionnalités, d'options, et de possibilités...J'avais d'anciens NAS de type "usage professionnel" d'une autre marque informatique, D-Link, avant sinistre, qui étaient déjà plutôt solides, mais le système embarqué des Synology est largement un cran encore au dessus. Honnêtement c'est presque un peu exagéré pour un usage strictement domestique/particulier (ce qui n'est pas mon cas) bien qu'il ai déjà toutes les fonctionnalités pour organiser et diffuser tout type de contenu multimédia (photos, musiques et vidéos).Par contre dans le cadre professionel (PME/PMI) c'est un excellent investissement tellement il peut faire de choses; impossible de toutes les lister ici mais il pourra à lui tout seul assumer de nombreux rôles techniques au sein de votre réseau local en plus du simple aspect "serveur de fichiers" (en vrac: serveur proxy, serveur mail, serveur web, DNS, serveur de sauvegardes et/ou de cloud, serveur applicatif de suite bureautique sous forme d'applications web - distantes ou intranet - ou encore serveur web et php...et la liste est terriblement longue)Niveau purement materiel: configuration CPU+RAM confortable... Egalement, il est fiable, silencieux, peu gourmand niveau consommation électrique, avec montage facile, différents types de technologie RAID pour la sécurité des données (mais avec juste 2 baies, on aura toutefois pas accès au meilleur de la technologie RAID mais cela reste quand même utile); il peux piloter des cameras de surveillances si besoin, ainsi que des adaptateurs wifi pour le rendre accessible en sans fil OU l'utiliser aussi comme point d'accès sans fil complémenrtaire sur votre LAN.Du très bon materiel !

Während die Fritzbox von 1&1 als "Homeserver" vermarktet wird, nennt Synology seine Produkte schlicht "Disk Station" oder NAS. Dabei sind sie so viel mehr.Meine Ansprüche waren:- Ein Out-of-the-box einsetzbares NAS mit Anbindungen für alle Betriebssysteme und einem smarten BluRay Player- Server für eine MediaWiki-Instanz als Vorstufe zum besseren Knowledge-Management, Host für weitere Web-Seiten, insbesondere einige statische Inhalte- Datensenke für Backups- Zugriff nur über das Heimnetz oder VPN- Stromsparend und leiseAll das habe ich erhalten und noch viel mehr.Hardware-Vorarbeiten und Betriebssysteminstallation========================1. Festplatten einbauen (bei mir auf Anraten in Bezug auf Langlebigkeit mehrerer Server-Techniker HGST-Platten speziell für NAS)2. Netzwerkkabel und Stromkabel anschließen3. Weboberfläche aufrufen, Festplatten formatieren lassen - ggf. Verbundtyp wählen, ich habe mich für SHR entschieden - und Disk Station Manager (DSM) auf die Platte laden und installieren lassen. Die gesamte Installation ist geführt und bei bestehender Internetanbindung super einfach. Ich selbst habe allerdings alle "online"-Dienste übersprungen. Es reicht mir, wenn ich die DS per VPN erreiche.Das Ganze hat etwa 1h ohne Stress gedauert. Ist die Installation durch, wird man auf einem sehr angenehmen im Browser dargestellten Desktop empfangen, auf dem es sich fast so arbeiten lässt, wie auf einem lokalen Rechner. (Fenster, Drag & Drop, Widgets, etc.)Funktionsumfang========================Die DS218Play bietet erfahrenen Linux-Administratoren dank Foren (auch deutscher) und einer Community den ohnehin schon großen Funktionsumfang zu erweitern. Ein bisschen Ahnung von IT sollte man beim Kauf des Gerätes allerdings haben oder willens sein, das gesamte, nicht nur inhaltlich sehr gute Handbuch (wird mit dem Disk Station Manager installiert) durchzulesen und ggf. unklare Begriffe nachzurecherchieren. Ein einfaches Backup bekommt jeder hin; vermutlich auch die Installation eines MediaWikis per Paket. Wer dagegen Dienste wie den DirectoryServer (LDAP) oder Git nutzen möchte, muss schon mehr an Voraussetzungen mitbringen.Standardmäßig installiert und auf dem Desktop angezeigt werden:- Hilfe-Center: Ausführlich genug, wenn man weiß, was man möchte.- Paket-Center: Per Mausklick lassen sich sehr viele open source Software-Pakete geladen, installiert und vorkonfiguriert werden -- Abhängigkeiten werden dabei von selbst aufgelöst. Der Funktionsumfang ist hervorragend. Auch Business-Management Pakete wie Odoo nebst Datenbankengines und Entwicklertools fehlen nicht.- Datei-Explorer: Stellt neben den privaten "home"-Verzeichnissen "gemeinsame Ordner" als Root-Verzeichnisse in seinem Verzeichnisbaum dar. (z.B. Photos, Videos, ...) Die Berechtigungen auf die "gemeinsamen Verzeichnisse" können mit Gruppen und Benutzer-Einstellungen angepasst werden.Kommandozeilen-Zugriff:- SSH-Zugriff ist möglich. Standardmäßig erhält man ash, bash war bei mir installiert, vielleicht durch eine Synology-Paket-Abhängigkeit. Das Betriebssystem (DSM) besitzt keinen guten Command-Line Paketmanager. Es gibt Community-Lösungen und man sollte darauf achten, dass Synology AppArmor aktiviert und konfiguriert hat. Einige Pakete lassen sich auch installieren, indem man im Paket-Center ein Paket installiert, das die Abhängigkeiten mitbringt und anschließend den Dienst stilllegt. So habe ich z.B. Git bekommen und konnte MediaWiki so installieren, wie ich es wollte (kurze URLs, PHP7-fpm, nginx)- telnet ist auch möglich. Nutze ich aber nicht einmal im Heimnetz.Täglicher Betrieb========================Das Gerät ist seit ca. 2 Wochen in Betrieb. Die Platten wurden sofort erkannt, laufen mit 7200rpm und 37-39°C, die Systemtemperatur gibt die Synology mit 40°C an. Der Lüfter befindet sich im geräuscharmen Modus und das ist er tatsächlich - kaum hörbar. Die HGST-Platten sind nicht die leisesten, aber die Gummistopfen an den Befestigungen verhindern, dass das Klacken ungedämpft auf das Gehäuse übergeht und so ist es am Schreibtisch erträglich. Die Platten wachen etwa 8x täglich auf - das beobachte ich weiter und werde ggf. auf Dauerbetrieb umstellen. Die maximal von mir gemessene Übertragungsgeschwindigkeit waren beim Schreiben etwa 50MB/s. Das ist nicht viel für 7200rpm Platten, aber für meinen Zweck reicht es. Das Abspielen von Videos am Player funktioniert trotz Schreibzugriffen aus anderen Bereichen problemlos. Die CPU-Auslastung liegt meist bei 2-8%, nach dem Hinzufügen von Fotos bei nahezu 100% bis die DS alle Vorschaubilder erzeugt hat. Die RAM-Belegung bei 30-40% (nginx, php-fpm, photo-, video-, download-, note-, audio-station und bis zu 10% cache für die Suche [elasticsearch]). Hat man ein Volume an einen Apple angebunden, so profitiert auch Spotlight-Search den von der DS bereitgestellten Suchindex.Läuft bisher alles top. Keine Aussetzer, MediaWiki-Seiten laden innerhalb weniger Sekunden, BluRay-Player spielt Inhalte ab wie erwartet, Zugriff aus dem Internet ist kein Muss. APC USV wurde erkannt.Software========================Neben Sync-Lösungen für Desktops bietet Synology zu fast jeder seiner Eigenentwicklungen (Video-, Photo-, Überwachungs-, Note-Station) Apps an, so dass auch mobile Begleiter von der NAS profitieren, so können z.B. Fotos automatisch synchronisiert werden. Gewöhnungsbedürftig war die Photo-Station, die nicht so eng an die Standardoberfläche der Synology angebunden ist. Sie verwaltet z.B. Benutzerrechte und URLs selbst und bietet die Möglichkeit einen Photo-Blog (Wordpress) anzulegen.
