These were my first climbing shoes. I know, I know, they have split bottoms and are not supposed to be beginner shoes - but are they really not?And as a woman who had been wearing heels daily for 20+ years, I challenge that notion. I am used to being on my toes. Maybe that notion was set in the first place by men. I guess I should footnote that as "non-cross-dressing men" because there are queens out there that can strut like the best of us, if not better.[Fit] I wear size 8.5, sometimes 8, in normal shoes. I bought these after having tried on something like 9 pairs of climbing shoes. The issue was always the heel cup and how the shoe hits against the narrowest part of my ankle (I do have narrow ankles) - others always hurt. This pair does NOT hurt at all.So while this is a pricier investment (psst, look online for better prices), this was a great buy for me. I believe mine are size 39 and plenty tight - tight enough that I often take my shoes off between climbs. Don't listen to that bs about going down half a size or a full size. You need to be comfortable to enjoy your climbs.[Smell] What they say about these shoes stinking is true, though. I'm past the age of sweating in my normal shoes and socks, but I can't deny that my feet sweat in these. The best remedy I've found are three-fold: Get a deodorizing spray for immediately after the climb, take them out of the bag when you get home for them to dry, then place Arm & Hammer balls or Boot Bananas inside. Here is what will likely happen instead: You'll spray your shoes after the climb then leave them inside the bag until then next time. For that, just get Arm & Hammer balls to place inside.[On the climb] After a year and half of weekly climbing, I'm still an intermediate at best. Let's just say any lack I have is not from the shoes. These are well-made with a good mix of leather, fabric, and rubber, and are grip on just fine with the finesse to stay onto slanted and small toe holds. Give them a try.
