This book was a real surprise for me. I had got a bit tired of reading and couldn't get motivated to start a new book. I had realised that I always go for the same type of story, so I only have myself to blame if it all seems a little predictable. This was recommended to me by some kind of algorithm and it was so outrageously far out of my reading comfort zone that I thought I ought to give it a try. This book is amazing - and not at all what I had expected. I expected some kind of paranormal, horror, sword fighty thing, and this book has all of these things going one, but it is so much more than that.Though a series of short but twisted fairy tales - really twisted and dark in some most unexpected ways, we meet Geralt, a witcher, destined to travel a strange land and kill monsters for money. Feared and mistrusted by most, he none the less has a strict moral code and holds is friends close. It is a complex world, and I found the first story a little too explainy, but the style soon settles down. By the end I was hooked. The storytelling is gripping and lively, the characters and complex and surprising - I was completely drawn in. I wasn't even put off but the unpronounceable names and the clearly very complex mythology that the author has created and then merely hinted at in these stories. One thing I really did not expect was just how funny these stories are, a vein of dry humour runs throughout, the law of surprise is honesty the best thing I have read about for along time, it is worth the read for that alone.

The corners were a little dented and the cover was a little dirty but otherwise really nice, the book itself is great, definitely worth a read.

This is the first book to begin with in the Witcher series. Mind you, it is not a big, comprehensive story. Rather, it is comprised out of different short stories to provide background to what is coming in the next book. It is mandatory to read this book before delving in the 'real' story, as it provides necessary background information on characters, events, and the political history of the setting.

This book is a collection of slightly-related short stories, and I didn't know this at the time when I bought it. I wasn't sure if I would like it once I realized the format, but it didn't take me long to decide that it was perfect. This book was amazing. Each of the stories feels like it has a point, some lesson to be learned, even though it's not totally obvious what that lesson is. The stories, all following the life of the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, make you stop to question what actually constitutes a monster. Things aren't always as they seem. At one point this becomes clear when some of the townspeople point out that some of the monsters actually do more good than harm, and state that they don't want the monster to be removed.I also really liked how the world feels like a medieval fantasy world, and yet it also has something somehow modern about it in the way some people talk and some concepts they have like insurance and so on.All in all it was a great story, great characters, and a great format. A clear 5 out of 5 stars.

Darauf folgt der Band The Sword of Destiny.

I am a huge fan of Witcher 3 so I decided to take a look at the books. The first chapter was very confusing to me and I kinda stopped reading it altogether until I recently picked it up again, accepted that I didn't really get the first chapter and rushed through the rest of the book.I loved it! I love the way the characters are described and how Geralt is characterized through dialogue and not actual descriptions. There's just enough mystery and just enough answers to make it interesting and boy did I get excited when I realized that it was Duny all along! So knowing the game actually made me more excited about the plot and din't spoil anything for me.The only thing I really didn't get was Geralt's relationship with Yennefer. I strongly dislike her so it's most likely harder for me to grasp but why Geralt is so fascinated with her didn't really come through to me. It's hinted at that that's kinda the point - he doesn't get it either.I am very excited to read the rest of the series!

Die Fehlenden Teile in der Reihe (Sword of Desitny, Tower of Swallow und Lady of the Lake) wurden teilweise (sehr gut) von fans online übersetzt, also keine Angst vor Wissenslücken.Für jeden der die Reihenfolge wissen möchte:The Last Wish (Short Stories)The Sword of Destiny (Short Stories) (Letzte Short Story started Haupthandlungsstrang der Romane)Blood of Elves (Erster Roman)Time of Contempt (Roman)Baptism of Fire (Roman)Tower of Swallow (Roman)Lady of the Lake (Roman)Epische Fantasy Reihe, eine wunderbar erzählte Story in einer sehr realitätsnahen, harschen Welt mit sehr liebevoll und tiefgründig gestalteten Characteren.
