The product came with what appeared to be a residual "ghost image" when used. I contacted Topdon and tried to get an exchange or refund but got ghosted by the company after they said they would help. Thumbs down on product and support.

So, a thermal camera, I thought. Now, what can I do with a thermal camera, that I can't do with hands-on experience? Well, for one, now my blisters are healed, from touching a red-hot exhaust pipe on the Widowmaker - my motorbike. The pain lasted 3 weeks, the blisters lasted 4, and knowing a guy who knew a guy who owned a thermal camera, I realised this was something I had to have. So, exhaust pipes. Well, I knew the bike had been running well before, but there's something about red-hot pipes that say to you (in a low, guilty tone) "You know you want to touch it, don't you?". It's like that WET PAINT sign that you just want - nay, NEED - to touch, just because it's there; or your wife's best embroidery scissors, just because you want to cut the dog's hair. So, you reach out, trembling, to place a hand - DARE YOU, DARE YOU - on the still-ticking exhaust pipe, and...well, I enjoyed the hospital food, the hysterical laughter of the nurses, who couldn't believe anyone would be that stupid, and I learned my lesson. Ah, a thermal camera...A thermal camera displays different heat energies on its display screen, and as cooler items have a different colour energy than hotter surfaces, it's enough to say that I could have discovered the hot exhaust before I touched it. Mechanics use thermal cameras, to show hotspots or spots that are cool, due to not working properly. Builders use them to check insulation gaps, electrical problems (which show as heat signals) and myriad other issues that a thermal camera is undoubtedly good at finding. The Topdon TC005 is an extremely efficient and precise tool that is worth its weight in gold; from using to monitor equipment, or maintenance, and can be handheld or connected to a PC via USB, in order to analyse images in real time, or later at your leisure.Like all Topdon products, it's very well packaged, and you get the folllowing:CameraUser ManualPower AdapterUSB Cable16gb Memory CardThe User Manual is short and precise, and doesn't overtax your brain with too many details. However, it's enough to get you up and running very quickly, and the rest is surprisingly easy to figure out, with the camera controls allowing you easy access to all functions. If you can't use this thing straight out of the box, you probably can't use a Hoover either - which makes you male, of course. I booted the camera up and had it reading heat signatures within minutes, without help from the manual. Easy to understand buttons help to guide you through the start-up procedure, and the rest, as they say, is a piece of cake.To tell the truth, there are only 5 buttons to play with, one being a multi-direction button that allows you to enter the built-in menus, which are very comprehensive and interesting to play around with. Kudos to Topdon for making this precision tool easy to use.You get a 2.8" viewing screen, big enough to view a lot of area, and using the USB Card in the camera's port will allow you to save images and videos for later analysis. Images can be Auto-Saved as you use the camera, by adjusting the camera's settings - clicking on the square multi-direction button twice will take you into the onboard menu, and there is a whole range of settings you can change. You can download special software from the Topdon site, which allows you to easily load images on your PC for a quick once-over and analysis.Heat energy can be read between -20c to 550c; camera is a 2mp visible light camera, and can take 'ordinary' photos as well as infra-red. Monitoring an area, the display shows a graded vertical line at right of screen, with the range of colours showing various heat signatures - a bit like a dip-stick for urine, which you analyse by reading colours on the stick - this is called the 'palette' in Settings. Therefore, yellow is a high-temperature area, while grey is cool. You can change the display colours - a bit like changing contrast on a TV - to suit your various fetishes. Thus, if you wish, you could have black showing hot, white cool, or maybe you fancy an IR option; there are plenty of options to choose from, including a PIP (picture-in-picture) option. Up to you. Personally, I like the default setting (grey to yellow) but hey, up to you. The screen also shows actual temperatures in centigrade (or F if you want to change it) so a human body will show as 30+ c, while a cool area may show as 2c (or lower). The camera incorporates a torch-light if you want to look in darkened areas, and is trigger-controlled once in use - pull trigger to take image/video.Settings include: 10 changeable settings for you to play with, the screen also shows a green cross (cold spot on the display), white cross (centre of display), red cross (hottest spot on display). So yeah, one of those things you thought you never wanted - a bit like telephones, colour TV's, 7 wives - but can't do without once you get it.Pictures/Videos Above:1: Colour display of Widowmaker. Yellow = hot/warm, black = cold/cool2: Widowmaker exhaust turns black, to denote heat. Display was changed to red/gray option for this shot.3: What's in the box.4: 5 Buttons. Think you're hard enough? Simples.5: What's being taken from the box.6: Living Room. Windows show red (heat)7: The Settings Menu8: Living Room. IR view9: Living Room. Basic view. Windows yellow (hot). You can see the vertical colour key scale on right of display.Summary: Expensive, yes. Technically competent? Yes. Nice bit of kit? Definitely. Come in handy? Would have saved my blisters and undoubtedly a must-have tool for any mechanic. One cylinder (out of 4) not functioning? This camera will detect it. Lost dog? Find him in the hedgerows. Infection in your knee? The TC005 will show it as a hotspot. Draught coming through door? Find the cool bit with this camera.Clearly, a versatile and useful diagnostic tool that is fun and interesting to use, as well as being able to detect problem areas. Expensive, but it's a tool you'll never want to get rid of. Keep it charged via USB, it's ready for use any time you like.Like all Topdon products, it does what it says on the tin. Simple to use: 5/5. Well-made quality tool: 5/5; a year guarantee: 5/5. Could save your life: Priceless. No hesitation in giving this 5 stars.
