I've used many of these boards – all “genuine” Espressif parts not clones. Most work as advertised but many suffer from poor quality of assembly typical of Chinese manufacturers. The failures I have been able to trace to a root cause have all been related to poor solder joints or other mechanical connection issues on the board. This latest one was the worst of all. The surface mount USB connector that is required to program the board was not soldered properly to the board. Simply inserting the proper USB cable the first time ripped the entire connector off the board taking the tiny traces with it. 20x magnification revealed that the corners of the USB connector which are all that mechanically hold the connector to the board were not soldered well at all. Now to get this board programmed, I have to come up with another way to get the connections made – not a small feat for such a small and delicate board. I feel I may have wasted another $15 on this company. I would gladly pay double for a higher quality product if it were only available!

It would be perfect if it had USB C instead of the micro B's.

手持ちのESP32搭載のマイコンボードがCircuitPython非対応だったので、対応品のこちらを購入。無事CircuitPythonが動作しました。CircuitPythonだけやりたいならRaspberryPiPicoでいいんですが、無線機能も使いたかったのでこちらを選びました。

First off, I'm a fan of the ESP32 product line and really like what Espressif has brought to market, however general support of the S3 is fairly lacking as of December 2021. This should come as no surprise, since it took 8-9 months after its release for the S2 to gain Arduino IDE support. At this point, it looks like Arduino IDE support for the S3 is coming spring/summer of 2022. To be fair, the S3 is now supported in Espressif's own IDF, unfortunately, I don't have the time to commit to learning yet another development environment- that's on me. The S2 and earlier versions of the ESP32 (as well as the also new(er) and Arduino IDE supported C3) remain perfectly relevant and viable for the majority of my work. I look forward to revisiting the S3 at a later date.
