Note: At the time of writing, Amazon has the wrong product title and image on this listing. If you order here, you will receive a 1/30 scoop (about 5cm diameter). If you want the very handy little 1/100, search for code "FPICE100" - it is under the brand name "Gilberts", but it is a branded Piazza scoop. I have both sizes: each of them are excellent and very useful.Gianni Piazza invented the ice cream scoop in 1961 (says so on the back of the box!) and they are still made in Italy. They are cutlery grade stainless steel, so easy to rinse under the tap or they can go anywhere in the dishwasher.Piazza is the Rolls Royce of scoops/dishers as far as I'm concerned. I use mine for portioning when baking, making meatballs, savoury stuffing balls and loads more (see the Web for more ideas). When using it for ice cream, as with any scoop, it's a good idea to leave the ice cream out for a few minutes to soften. This makes sure you don't put stress on the head/neck of the scoop (I guess this is how a lot of people manage to snap the heads off theirs!). If scooping ice cream directly from the freezer, I think it's better to use the sturdier type of scoop that doesn't have the sprung handle and slider action, and simply dip it in hot water between scoops. The "static" scoops are nowhere near as versatile as this multitasker, but will take plenty more abuse before they snap. It's worth mentioning that I haven't paid more than a tenner for a Piazza scoop on Amazon. I picked one up from the Amazon Warehouse for under a fiver, but the others were brand new and heavily discounted. I haven't worked out a pattern but it might be that there is just one left in stock for too long and Amazon prefers not to have a single item taking up shelf space.I have compared Piazza/Gilberts scoops with De Buyer, Paderno, Norpro and a few others. Paderno is a very good quality second choice (almost as good as Piazza, actually) and Norpro is a great budget buy. If you receive a scoop that binds up on the bowl or is hard to squeeze, arrange an exchange, it's worth it to get a good one. The budget ones like Norpro may grind a little at the base of the handle, but it doesn't seem to affect their longevity. Hope this helps.
