Good to help raise and repair dropped masonry.I purchased this cylinder and pump to use as a pad jack to help me make some structural repairs after a "builder" bodged preparation of a wall opening for patio windows, leaving my home (cottage bungalow) with an unstable rear wall, which began developing cracks in multiple places, and an upstairs window dropped, leaving a gap above it's upper frame. The RSJ wasn't pre loaded with the structural weight, allowing the wall to drop by about 13mm total, causing multiple mortar joint tension and shear cracks, which just got worse over a year and would never settle. He wouldn't fix it!This is how I used it, it is not a guide-Every 2nd brick was removed from above the RSJ flange, This piston, along with wood packing to spread the load fitted easily into the space, it was raised just sufficiently to insert a wood support into the brick space before releasing the jack, leaving the wood to bear the weight and transfer it to the flanges of the RSJ.This cycle was repeated multiple times along the top of the RSJ, using a string line as a guide in raising just 1mm at a time before stacking shims on the wood supports until sufficient height had been recovered and the full load was at last bearing on the RSJ as intended. Seeing the visible cracks closing up and the window returning to it's proper position was so satisfying!Without this piston and pump, I would have needed to construct my own screw jacks or pay 1000"s for a structural repair by someone who really did understand what an RSJ was meant to do and how, now I know that these people are hard to find.Any builder who finds sections of masonry dropping slightly during a job would find this tool invaluable and a real time saver. The common alternatives like Acrows or other supports transfer the load to the ground; above an installed RSJ, the load has to be transferred to the joist. Something like a hydraulic piston/pad jack bears the load of the wall and transfers it to the RSJ, so allowing it to deflect by the expected height under load before replacing the bricks.Problems? It is a clumsy combination to carry up a ladder multiple times, the pump has a foot which hangs onto a ladder rung, but it is easy to dislodge. Use a couple of cable ties to secure it.This is a short cylinder/piston, with an under square stroke, making it possible to skew and jam the piston if care isn't taken to ensure the cylinder is supported so that under load, the piston top is parallel with the meeting surface of the load. The instructions are poor, the supplied pump needs to be orientated so that the end where the hose exits is lower than the other end, otherwise an air pocket may prevent it from pumping. The hydraulic line can be removed from a loaded piston without it dropping, additional pistons are available, but moving the pump from one to the next can spill a little oil from the coupling and get dirt into the system..
