Bought two of these for our 1st and 2nd floor landings to activate the Hue we have on them. They're perfect for providing automated illumination for any night time movement, particularly the kid's night time loo visits... which totally saves me needing to have a routine set up that effectively leaves the lights on all night, just in case. They come well packaged, as the rest of the Hue range... first thing that surprises is that they're much smaller than the pics would have you believe (approx. 50mm square) and come with a strong magnetic mount that allows for easy portability or temporary relocation. The second is just how simple they are to set up. The Philips Hue app - unjustifiably in my opinion - often comes in for a lot of flack in reviews for it's lack of 'features'... but it can't be slated for the ease of setup. You can set up a single motion detector to control up to four 'rooms' with global settings for pre-set light level or a 'scene', day and night operational time zones, three levels of presence detection sensitivity, daylight sensor range, 'no motion' duration time and light state thereafter. For me, it's only that last option that has its limitations... when it detects no motion, after a user-definable time period, it's choices are 'Do Nothing' (where in most applications, the light will simply remain on)... or 'Off' (where it will dim briefly before switching off). It would be nice to be able to chose a 'scene' or a 'dim to' level, for example (surely, only a software update away). Other than that, it really does work reliably and brilliantly. The family are well impressed.Definitely the best accessory Philips have introduced to the Hue line. Highly recommended.

I am using a Smartthings Hub along with Hue lighting. Being in Hong Kong, I don't have a lot of choice when it comes to home automation. Houses are usually really small and so people don't have as much an incentive to use home automation as switches are usually at arms length. However, being the geek that I am, I decided to automate most of the things at home just so life could be easier for both myself and the Mrs. (she forgot to turn off the lights and air-conditioning which consumes 1100Watts before going on our vacation). I remember hopelessly looking through our security cam feed 1000 miles away hearing the hum of the air-conditioner and the light spilling from the bathroom. Therefore, I decided to do something about it.Our base system is the Samsung Smartthings Hub which connects to Philips Hue, Logitech Harmony Hub, Smartthings Sensors, Belkin Wemo, and some third party devices with the help of Smartthings Community members sharing their code.At first, everything seemed to work quite well, but one day, my wife started screaming that the water heater would not go on. It seems that the Smartthings multisensor which detects that the shower door is closed to turn on the water heater (controlled by Wemo) seem to have failed. It was stuck on OPEN despite the door being closed. A few emails with Smartthings support and it seems like the magnet inside the sensor had died. Another scream that night and it seems that the Smartthings motion sensor that was supposed to turn on the kitchen lights had failed.A lot of emails between Smartthings and myself made the sensor work for another week before no amount of resets would make the sensor detect motion again. This sensor was the furthest from the Hub, and I believe that somehow when the Zigbee Smartthings motion sensor is struggling with a low signal, it would burn through it's battery and kill the sensors inside. I can't confirm this but I've talked with other users with similar issues and it is always the sensors that are the furthest away that seems to die more easily. When Hue came out with it's own motion sensor, I decided to give it a try (at full MSRP on Amazon too!).First of all, this sensor uses normal AAA batteries which would cost a lot less to replace than the CR2450 (which must come from certain manufacturers) to fit the poorly designed battery contacts of the Samsung Smartthings Motion Sensor. Second of all, the response time is day and night! I believe that this sensor connects through the Hue Zigbee Light Link mesh unlike the Samsung Smartthings Motion sensors which must connect directly to the Hub. As such, in an apartment that is made of concrete and steel rebars like mine, it's far easier to extend the Zigbee Light Link signal using Hue bulbs. Smartthings only allow powered devices such as the Smartthings power outlet to extend it's signal. Unfortunately, the UK Smartthings power outlet has only just been released and is back-ordered. The US version which is 110-120V is a no go in Hong Kong which was once a British Colony following all British standards. As such, the kitchen lights will turn on once the sensor detects motion. With smartthings, the delay was about 1.5 - 3 seconds. With Hue's sensor, it's under 1.5 seconds. Smartthings sensor also has the bad habit of turning on only one of the two bulbs in my kitchen ceiling light but Hue's sensor never fails. The Hue motion sensor also has a status LED which actually works to tell you things like poor connection or low battery unlike the Smartthings one which is hidden under it's outer cover and is totally cryptic with it's random flashes of different colors. Even support was inconsistent in the interpretation of the different flashes during pairing. Now to some of the criticism some users have had. Yes, this is a smart dumb sensor. The customization is seriously lacking. Smartthings sensors can trigger different events based on time, modes, and many other things. Hue's sensor only allows a time based and light intensity based trigger. However, for triggering simple lights, I find that the most crucial options are already there. The light sensor now means that my kitchen lights no longer turns on when the sun is pouring in during the daytime. And that my neighbors are unlikely to see me half naked in the middle of the night when I go grab a drink at 2 am in the morning as the nightlight mode kicks in during 11pm - 6am. Lights also dim before turning off completely which is a built in feature. With Smartthings, a lot of extra rules would have to be built for something like this. The Hue motion sensor is also a lot bigger than the Smartthings one. It's almost double the depth of the Samsung Smartthings one, but again, it's a tradeoff of using AAA batteries. However, the bigger casing also meant that Hue was able to put a better ball joint type magnetic mount which works a lot better than the clip on mount that Smartthings provide for it's Smartthings sensor.Overall, if consistent triggering of your Hue lights is your first priority, do give this Hue sensor a try! This has saved many of my remaining sensors which my wife had vowed to rip off should they fail to trigger the lights again.
