This books brings forth the roots of the English culture, of the Englishness as the author puts it. To further understand what the English are all about and to recognise what may be beneath the surface when meeting, being. greeting and connecting with the English. I loved it and it helps me tremendously to sharpen my observation and my relationship building with the English.

Das Buch kam sehr schnell an. Hat Ca. Nur 2 Tage gedauert. Ohne Prime! Ich habe bis jetzt nur die ersten paar Seiten gelesen. Aber soweit ließt es sich ganz gut auf Englisch. Bin gespannt. Habe nur gutes gehört :)

So hätte ein Deutscher das Buch vielleicht genannt. Kate Fox hängt das mit typisch englischem Understatement tiefer. Die Anthropologin bescheibt als "teilnehmende Beobachterin" Verhaltensweise, Gewohnheiten, konditionierte Reflexe der Engländer(innen) auf äußerst unterhaltsame Weise, aber wissenschaftlich fundiert. Das Buch ist ein "Update" der Ausgabe von 2004, in dem viele neue "Verhaltensregeln" z.B. im Internet aufgeführt sind.Es macht Spaß, ihr dabei zuzuschauen, wie sie die genannten Verhaltensweisen und Grundstimmungen (Humor, Bescheidenheit, Fairness, die Schwierigkeiten bei der zwischenmenschlichen Kontaktaufnahme) in der Weise, wie sie schreibt, selbst immer wieder zum Ausdruck bringt. Ein hohes Maß an Selbstreflexion und Humor. Gerade für uns Deutsche erhellend, da man bei allen Ähnlichkeiten der Nationalcharaktere die Unterschiede besser verstehen lernt. Interessant für kulturell, psychologisch oder anthropologisch Interessierte oder für Leute, die mit Engländer(innen) zu tun haben, und ein großer Lesespaß.

Wer Großbritannien kennt, öfter dort war, immer noch gerne hingeht und bereits das britische Benehmen "geschnuppert" hat, wird dieses Buch höchst amüsant finden, denn Vieles kommt einem äußerst bekannt vor. Für Neulinge in Sachen Vereinigtes Königreich ist das Werk von Kate Fox jederzeit zu empfehlen, da die Autorin mit viel humorvoller Selbstkritik ihre Landsleute und deren Verhalten mit allen Spleens und Ticks beschreibt. Kate Fox selbst ist der bekannte englische Humor inne, so geraten ihre Beschreibungen niemals langweilig. Es ist ein Buch zum Tränen lachen, jedoch ohne Boshaftigkeit im Nacken. Was die Autorin beschreibt, beruht ausschließlich auf Tatsachen. Wer sich manchmal über die eine oder andere Reaktion eines englischen Freundes oder Geschäftspartners wundert, findet in diesem Buch Antworten auf alle Fragen. "Watching the English" ist unbedingt empfehlenswert!

Kate Fox is a anthropologist who prefers to study her own culture. After a book about the subculture of the horseracing crowd (Racing Tribe) she here tackles the English as a whole, leaving out on purpose other UK or British tribes. Written with tongue in cheek humour the book looks at Work, Leisure, Pubs, Class, Public Transport and other aspects of daily life and the author tries to find out if there is are certain attitudes or characteristics that differentiate the English from other cultures. While each of the subjects might give a social scientist work for a long time this overview is for an amateur like me an enjoyable read and as a foreigner I gained valuable insights in the "workings" of the English. I plan on giving the book to my German friend who has been living in England for over 15 years now and am sure she will enjoy it, too.
