Waveshare disappoints here. If you thought this part might be ready for integration into a finished product with any level of polish, forget it. The GPIO header is seven stories tall and comprised of a single soldered-on part (although you'd be forgiven for thinking it's a female to female adapter atop a normal-sized male pin header based on its appearance). In short, you MUST attach a full-fat Raspberry Pi to this display, else be happy with a Pi Zero or Compute Module carrier teetering above the virtual Grand Canyon of empty space this ridiculously-sized header creates. They designed it such that the total thickness of a a model B / B+ Pi, including the thickness of its board, Ethernet port, and a small additional margin of error must be included in your completed project, whether you're using one of these "fat" models of Pi or not.Maybe your finished project casing was going to be the emptied-out shell of a 1960's Impala and this won't bother you. My expectation is that a small display can be used in a small product, so it bothers the ever-living-heck out of me, especially knowing that a normal size header could have been used and a simple extender included. Those of us wanting something small would be happy. Those who wanted to use essentially the Raspberry Pi equivalent of a desktop computer, albeit with a 4" display could use the extender and also be happy. Waveshare, wouldn't it be nice if everyone could be happy?

Screen is nice and works at full speed, searched the install directions and it came up first time. Sadly it's reversed from the HyperPixel4sq so it doens't fit in my 3d printed cases, I hoped it would fit identically to that 4" screen. Included stand-offs fit perfectly. Running it with a Pi3a and Bullseye for now since Bookworm blows chunks on the Pi3a and Bullseye is supported for another year.

I took this display for a few experiments with RaspberryPi. As an ultimate goal I wanted to have some kind of health monitoring (i.e. CPU temperature, utilization, disk space, etc…) for a permanent RPI server which is running Ubuntu 24/7. However I made a mistake as I didn’t pay attention to details so I missed the fact that there is no micro HDMI connector on this display, instead this display is connecting straight to the GPIO interface which makes perfect sense. Since my current RPI is in an aluminum enclosure where I also used thermal paste and thermal pads to improve heat dissipation, I decided to get a new one specifically for this display rather than dismantling my current setup. Therefore, as of this time I can only do a visual inspection and from that perspective this display looks very solid from a quality standpoint. I like PCB which is nicely manufactured. At this time I have no concerns. This display with resolution 720 x 720 is the perfect size for my home lab projects. When I get “monitoring” RPI I’ll update this review if I come across any concerns.

Using to simulate aircraft display, paired up with a mini pi3A. Make sure you search for the wiki page, all the needed config and SW is there. Works well with Pygame.

It took some doing but it was the best form factor I found that worked in my case. I still haven’t managed to get the touch working yet but that’s my ignorance I’m sure. The wiki is the key to make it all work, plenty bright and very good screen. Fallout 76 pip-boy 2000 screen
