I have lived long enough to find that I've never regretted buying a quality product, even if the product was a lot more expensive than alternatives, and once again, that is the case.A knife is such a basic tool, it's easy to forget that it is a tool and, to my surprise, know that there are different levels of quality. The easy shortcut we take is that if it's the most expensive knife in the department store, then it must be good. Are Henkels knives great? I really don't know- never owned one. I've always gotten by with Cuisinart's which, to be fair, feel like pretty much any knife you'd buy at the store. The store-bought knife experience seems to reinforce the fact that most knives are about the same, so why spend more if you don't have to? How much can anyone really expect in a simple piece of steel? Well, I'm sad to break it to you, but there is a significant difference. The packaging was minimal and completely (COMPLETELY) recyclable. It's a small point, but any effort I can take to ensure my consumerism isn't adding to environmental destruction makes me feel a little better. This won't be a selling point to many, and isn't the most important value proposition of the knife. I get that.Gude knives, including this one, are made in Germany. I feel good knowing that someone is making a fair wage from my purchase. I also feel better supporting an ethically responsible nation in a very crazy world where some feel supporting workers and human rights should take a back seat to making products. Again, this isn't a selling point to many, and isn't the most important value proposition of the knife, but it feels better. Of course it increases the price of the knife, but I believe it's worth it.And then, the major value proposition: the knife.Heavens! It is so incredibly balanced, just the right weight and so solid in my hand that it almost feels like an extension of my hand. THAT is what a good tool should feel like. A good knife should make you feel like Edward Scissorhands, and that's what this does. I feel like I could properly cut anything set before me- and that matters. When I'm skinning a fish, which is what this is for, I don't want any slips, any waste, or any wasted effort. A knife that delivers THAT is worth the extra money, if nothing else, and this does.I could not be both happier and sadder at this purchase. I'm happy I found such an incredible knife. I'm sad, because now I know the difference. No more cheap knives in my house. But then again, these aren't the kind of items you replace often. Given good care, these should last a lifetime.
