Despite making many other distinguished films in his long, wandering career, Francis Ford Coppola will always be known as the man who directed The Godfather trilogy, a series that has dominated and defined their creator in a way perhaps no other director can understand. Coppola has never been able to leave them alone, whether returning after 15 years to make a trilogy of the diptych, or re-editing the first two films into chronological order for a separate video release as The Godfather Saga. The films are an Italian-American Shakespearian cycle: they tell a tale of a vicious mobster and his extended personal and professional families (once the stuff of righteous moral comeuppance), and they dared to present themselves with an epic sweep and an unapologetically tragic tone. Murder, it turned out, was a serious business.

The first film remains a towering achievement, brilliantly cast and conceived. The entry of Michael Corleone into the family business, the transition of power from his father, the ruthless dispatch of his enemies--all this is told with an assurance that is breathtaking to behold. And it turned out to be merely prologue; two years later The Godfather, Part II balanced Michael's ever-greater acquisition of power and influence during the fall of Cuba with the story of his father's own youthful rise from immigrant slums. The stakes were higher, the story's construction more elaborate and the isolated despair at the end wholly earned. (Has there ever been a cinematic performance greater than Al Pacino's Michael, so smart and ambitious, marching through the years into what he knows is his own doom with eyes open and hungry?) The Godfather, Part III was mostly written off as an attempted cash-in but it is a wholly worthy conclusion, less slow than autumnally patient and almost merciless in the way it brings Michael's past sins crashing down around him even as he tries to redeem himself. --Bruce Reid, Amazon.com

On the DVD: Contained in a tasteful slipcase, the three movies come individually packaged, with the second instalment spread across two discs. The anamorphic transfers are acceptable without being spectacular, with Part 3 looking best of all. Francis Ford Coppola--obviously a DVD fan--provides an exhaustive and enthusiastic commentary for all three movies, although awkwardly these have to be accessed from the Set Up menu. The fifth bonus disc is a real goldmine: the major feature is a 70-minute documentary covering all three productions, which includes fascinating early screen-test footage. There's also a 1971 making-of featurette about the first instalment, plus several shorter pieces with Coppola, Mario Puzo and others talking about specific aspects of the series, including a treasurable recording of composer Nino Rota performing the famous theme. Another section contains all the Oscar-acceptance speeches and Coppola's introduction to the TV edit, plus a whole raft of additional scenes that were inserted in the 1977 re-edited version. Text pieces include a chronology, a Corleone family tree and biographies of cast and crew. Overall, this is a handsome and valuable package that does justice to these wonderful movies. --Mark Walker

The Godfather films are a truly brilliant trilogy. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and wonderfully cast they tell the story of the Corleone crime family. Throughout the collection we get to see how they achieved their rise to prominence and how Michaels vow to one day become legitimate never seems to materialise.Parts I through III tell how a young Italian immigrant to New York found his way into the dirty and corrupt world of mob life eventually prospering and gaining the respect and fear of both distinguish and ordinary people. We see how in the changing of the guard the death of the 'Don' brings his young war hero son Micheal into the family business. This new role is something that will change him forever.Although not based on actual events you get the impression that the films do provide an accurate, in-depth, insight into the activities of a leading mob family.Indeed the first thing you realise is that for the Corleones, family is the most important thing, yet at the same time it is the people you love and trust who are most likely to stab you in the back.Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are hugely convincing and superbly supported throughout and help bring to life this amazing set of films. Some have said that Part III was not of the same standard of the other two and was used more to cash in on the Godfather name. However I feel that it is both a high quality film and a very fitting end to the story charting Michaels later years and repentance on his quest for redemption.I would certainly recommend this set I think it is quite a bargain.

Before you even think about buying Goodfellas or Casino, you must buy the Godfather. Mafia films such as these are brilliant, but do not match up to the beauty of the Godfather. Directed by Frances Ford-Coppola and based on the book by Mario Puzo, the Godfather is one of the best trilogys ever alongside Lord of the Rings and the original Star Wars. Set in three parts, each its own story, not a continuation, the Godfather is not just about the Mafia; the Mafia are the sub plot - family love and trust is the story.Godfather Part I (1972) - Starring Marlon Brando as the old Mafia Don, Vito Corleone, the first of the three films, set in the late 40s to the mid 50s, is a study of the Cosa Nostra and how far family go for each other. This made Al Pacino who plays the reserved youngest son of the Don, Michael. Other co-starring actors are James Caan as the fiery oldest son, Robert Duvall as the adopted son, John Cazale as the innocent, warm hearted son, Taila Shire (Coppola's sister) as the whiny, annoying daughter, Diane Keaton as Michael's anxious and detached girlfriend and Richard Castellano as the fat, loyal henchman. This is the film that made crime a genre.Godfather Part II (1974) - Following Part 1, the second artistic masterpiece of the Godfather trilogy illustrates how power can corrupt even the most innocent. Like the first part, it's sentimental and beautiful. It runs from the mid 50s to the 60s but there is an added bonus; a young Robert De Niro stars alongside Al Pacino as a young Vito Corleone who journeyed from the Mafia infested island of Sicily, his family murdered. It shows his rise to power (the epic scene of the rooftop stalk is a must see) and his return to Sicily for revenge.Godfather Part III (1990) - An underrated film, the finale of the Godfathers shows the fall of Michael Corleone. Set in the late 70s, Michael Corleone is already an old man and has no son to pass his title onto until he stumbles across a lost nephew, played by a young Andy Garcia. Michael returns to Sicily where he wants to die. The film features Diane Keaton and Tailia Shire, as well as Eli Wallach but also Bridget Monoghan, Joe Montagna and Sofia Ford-Coppolla. The films climax is moving and abrupt. Although inferior to the other two, Part III is different yet maintains the same beauty as the rest of the trilogy. The Godfather Trilogy gets better every time you watch it. The trilogy is not a gun-toting film like films such as Scarface, but the power is in the words and imagery. The music, composed by the late Nino Rota, is beautiful, featuring the infamous Godfather Waltz. The acting is superb and the film leaves the famous scenes in your head; the horse's head. The film is far superior to the book because it is less of a documentary. Watch the films before you read the book. These are some of the best films ever made that you should definately see before you die. Films packed with power, emotion, brutality, love and sentimentality.

Francis Ford copolla's depiction of the Godfather is truly one of the greatest movies ever made, and has stood the test of time and will continue to do so.The acting within the movies are of a very high standard, and needs to be as copolla only deals with pure acting that are up to the task. Al Pacino leads the cast in all three films but in the first movie he is only one great actor in a movie that stars an all star cast including Marlon Brando who was extremely convincing playing the Godfather Don corleone. He was backed up by James Caan and Robert Duvall who played his sons expertly well, but amongst these there are equally good performances by Talia Shire (Rocky 1,2,3,4 and 5) and Dianne Keaton who all add so much to all of these movies. Also these films are excellent on DVD, and at the price of £29.99 is an absolute bargain. Each movie has its own sleeve and the second part has 2 discs to it and the special features have also a sleeve of its own. Unlike many boxsets the special features in the Godfather are very good as they take you deep into the makings of the movies and their extreme attention detail, and also the deleted gives you the chance to see how Copolla wanted the movie to look, if only they didnt have to cut them for saving the length of the main features. The second movie is probably the best out of three, as you a treated a rarity in cinematic history as the sequal being a better movie than the first, but of course this is only opinion as the frist movie is fantastic also. The third movie offers you how al Pacino(Micheal Corleone) was dealing with the life that he has lead and the affect it had in his family because it is set in the late 70's and gives you the chance to see how Godfather looks in more recent times which was done with great aplomb and accuracy, and again you get drawn into another complex plot that leads you back to Sicily. All in all because each movies are 3 hours long you do really feel that you get total value for your money as there is so much here to watch and will take you a while to get through this lot and at the value price of £29.99 any godfather fan would be mad to turn it down. Great movies, great acting great on dvd and great on value. A must buy...!!!
